Related: About this forumRobert Downey Jr. Says Tony Stark Endorses Hillary Clinton For President
Speaking with Howard Stern, Downey Jr. said: "I believe Tony [Stark], being a budding feminist, he would say it's time to have some feminine energy in the White House."
When Howard double checked, asking if that indeed is the candidate that Tony Stark would back, Downey Jr. responded: "He does,"
The actor stays away from political conversations overall, but he did add "I'm going to vote. That's what's important."

(24,979 posts)12 issues a year, 40 years, multiple titles, crossovers, reboots, etc. etc. So it's even possible for Downey to affect that the drunk womanizer is some kind of feminist crusader. You can basically play every political angle with these characters. Stark never got out of corporate statism, of course, and played the surveillance-and-control heavy in Civil War.

(20,176 posts)Since the backstory on Tony Stark from the comics strongly suggests he's a Republican or at-least a conservative...that's a fair gain for us.

(20,176 posts)I took Downey's comments as more along the line of disgust with the GOP on the part of Stark. (Bears noting that Downey himself is a long-time Republican and an extremely-conservative one.)
I don't like Hillary, but if the values of the "Republican super hero" align more closely with Clinton than the modern Republican party...that says as much about the GOP as Hillary Clinton, perhaps more even.

(1,507 posts)But he has said his experience in prison altered his world view. From the NYT:
I have a really interesting political point of view, and its not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you cant go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You cant. I wouldnt wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics ever since.
He comes off as someone who has more libertarian tendencies. I guess in many ways that's just as bad. Most libertarians I've met have been morons. But he's not Sean Hannity or Limpballs either.

(20,176 posts)and that was one of the things that attracted him to the character, there aren't really that many characters that have clear political leanings at-all, fewer that espouse conservative values.

(20,176 posts)because it suggests more to me the thinking of the guy behind the guy behind the iron mask.
If Robert Downey Jr. thinks Tony Stark would support Clinton in the general election...it tells me that even a staunch conservative playing a military-industrialist conservative billionaire can't see any way to support this GOP cesspool. That is a good gain, one that provides insight into the zeitgeist.
I'm going to point out that my background is in Political Theory, specialized in poli. comm. It influences my worldview and it has allowed me to see exactly how much the underlying worldview and premises of cultural content influences the politics of this or any nation. I see this as being a fuckton more valuable than campaign contributions or volunteer hours or any single vote...where popular culture leads, the nation inevitably and inescapably follows.
All the Koch money in the world cannot stem the tide of popular culture. Entertainment as a sector as a whole matters a whole lot more than what Trump or Cruz or Clinton or Sanders wants. Obama didn't make gay marriage happen, politicians and politics in general even, didn't do that...a lot of depictions of gay domesticity made it seem common and banal to the point that nobody outside of the wacko fringe was left in opposition. From there it was an inevitability. Pick any major issue...lather, rinse, repeat.
Media content is the most powerful political force in the world.

(6,568 posts)The Superhuman Registration Act could be seen akin to gun control. The powers are dangerous. Even Spider-Man agreed, and lifted his mask to the public (and secrecy was his big thing).
Lots of ways to look at it. Regardless, Civil War is one of my favorite story arcs. I'm just finishing up Cable & Deadpool's Civil War tie-in. Good stuff.
