If independents are expected to stay the hell out during the primary, what are we expected to do in the general?

Party nominations are for...the parties.
Independents aren't in a party.

(2,550 posts)Primaries are for party nominations.
But the real fact is, each state chooses it's own rules, so there's no debate.

We had ours that way, and Bernie won big.
Since it was such a mess though the legislature
plans to go to open primaries again.

(53,771 posts)If independents want to vote in primaries, join a party and do phone banking, canvassing, signage, etc., or start one and do phone banking, canvassing, signage, etc.
IMO if one isn't willing to work within a party for their preferred candidate, why should they be allowed to participating in who the party nominates?

(53,771 posts)Dems and repugs will keep their respective states paying for primaries.
Try talking to your congressperson about that is you think you can get them to change that.
Won't happen as both parties benefit.

(6,900 posts)independents. I would expect you to vote for the candidate that you like best in the general. No one stops independents from joining the party, but if they can't be bothered or they haven't decided if they'd rather support Republicans, then they shouldn't vote in the Democratic primary.

DWS couldn't have been more successful at destroying the Dem Party if she were a Republican. They seem to think that regardless of how badly they fuck this up - everyone will come round and vote for the Corporatist.

Can you vote in elections for ANY group in which you are not a member?
Why this sense of entitlement with respect to political parties?

(1,182 posts)If the primary process had no effect on people outside the party then, in a convoluted way, you'd have a point.
But that's not the case.
