(1,630 posts)I wish I could say this comes as a surprise, but it does not. I wish I could say that it is new but it is the same as it has ever been. This is "news" to nobody who has been paying attention. The underbelly of what truly drives some who claim the mantle of progressivism is being exposed. And they say women and minorities are low information voters. Nope. They've been watching this storyline for so long they have it memorized. 2016 really is a year of revolution. It just may not be playing out the way some have planned.

(8,217 posts)There are quite a few key points there which can resonate to an Independent voter.
First off, I must state that I have been an unabashed Unaffiliated for most of my life until January where I finally put the (D) on my name. That will change as soon as I am allowed to change my registration. I have voted for the lesser of two evils as that has always been my only choice, although I did become a real devotee towards Kerry when he was running and I thought he would have been one of the better Presidents had he won.
2008, Clinton and Obama depressed me as I did not trust her or him, but they were still much better than Palin.
I have been unaffiliated as it allows me to have a choice between the lesser of two evils, and in general, the Democrat usually is.
There are quite a few reasons why now and then I teeter totter over thinking that Clinton is just a little bit better, just as bad or worse than some Republicans. Fortunately however, the current crop of candidates tend to make her look reasonable by a wide margin.
Unfortunately however, not everyone will see that, and in that article as well, it shows some of the reasons why those who are not beholden to any party would take the chance on Trump. Snake oil salesman that he is.
I understand that Trump will be:
-A Disaster towards the Supreme Court, he will likely put up a conservative judge.
-In regards to a woman's right to choose... Trump has been all over the place in this particular issue. So, I don't actually know where he will stand on this in the end.
-In regards to War, and the Middle East... To me, other than trying to figure out the candidate's other priorities before this, it is not in my forefront in regards to making a decision. I tend to think that the President will do whatever the ground situation will be and react to it. The thing I look at is if they would increase defense spending, be a hawk, and that is about it. I absolutely can not stand either of their stance in regards to this as they cause us more enemies.
-Immigration, Trump's position is clear, and despicable. Clinton's, seems to be somewhat balanced. So I can place her way ahead at least on this one.
-I actually don't know how the two of them would be in regards to LGBT rights. Both of them have been all over the place, and Clinton has a penchant of selling people out as soon as she gets what she wants. So... I don't know.
See, the thing with Trump is, he's a loud-mouth and all over the place when it comes to policy as he doesn't really know what he's doing. The thing he does promise to do that are clear are two things, one negative and one positive.
1 - Immigration, building walls, being very crazy about deportation and other matters in this case. Fortunately, we do have checks and balances, not to mention that people have to go through due process, so whatever he will try to do with this will be blunted somewhat. Granted, the environment will be toxic due to this, but it really has been toxic for a long while now, starting from GWBush.
2 - Re-negotiate contracts and agreements that we have to find a better deal.
The second one, can resonate with quite a lot of people. He brings up the bad decision making of Clinton, where she has had to back-track, "correct the record", and sometimes pad her experience, when she really doesn't need to.
This article, basically shows that it is hard to figure out who is the lesser evil between those two.
For some, they think that someone like Clinton would give the Republicans what they want, and more, and pass that kind of legislation benefitting the 1% which would not pass on a Republican President since then the Democrats would actually fight against it. Much like Obama has undermined the Democrats' opposition towards some of the deals he made with the Republicans, to the point that he considered cutting Social Security. Hence, there are quite a few who would consider a Clinton Presidency to be worse than a Republican one.
I don't know if I believe that or not. I am just saying what others may think and feel.
So yes, it is chilling, especially right now as Trump is pivoting to the center and making himself sound more reasonable.
Clinton has an uphill battle in convincing Independents and some Democrats to go towards her. At the moment, I can still say I will vote for her come November, but again, it has been getting harder and harder to say that, and I am not willing to donate, or join her campaign.
My efforts will go towards the Senate and Congress in my area. She will get my vote come November, but beyond that, I just don't see it at this time. That, may still change, though I am hoping not, as it can go either way.
One can not expect that Bernie will be able to convince them to go towards her, as it isn't about him. It is about her.

(1,151 posts)It's clear that far too many white "progressives" do not give one shit about black people, or are flat out racist.

(30,254 posts)The man would be a disaster for the country. I would walk through fire to vote for his opponent, whether it's Hillary, Sanders or any other Democrat.
That any Sanders' supporter would try to make a case for voting for Trump in the GE just proves how far down the rabbit hole some of them have fallen.

(17,064 posts)Voters to whom those issues are important, might vote for Trump. Many of those voters are probably from Independants, who owe no loyalty to the Democratic Party. I don't think many Sanders supporting Democrats will vote for Trump...their votes will likely split between Clinton and Stein.
