New York’s Mayor Responds as Brooklyn Voter Purge Doubles to 126,000

New York’s Mayor Responds as Brooklyn Voter Purge Doubles to 126,000

Tom Cahill | April 19, 2016

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is demanding an explanation from the city’s Board of Elections after the purge of registered Democrats in Brooklyn has doubled from 63,000 to 126,000.

As US Uncut previously reported, Kings County, where Brooklyn is located, has seen a 7 percent drop in the number of registered Democratic voters between November 2015 and April 2016. But a new investigation by WNYC has revealed that the New York City Board of Elections actually purged 126,000 voters in that time period — a 14 percent drop in 5 months. Now, Mayor de Blasio is demanding to know why there was such a precipitous drop in registered voters just before the primary.

“This number surprises me,” de Blasio told WNYC. “I admit that Brooklyn has had a lot of transient population – that’s obvious. Lot of people moving in, lot of people moving out. That might account for some of it. But I’m confused since so many people have moved in, that the number would move that much in the negative direction.”

Kings County was just one of seven counties, out of a total of 63, where the number of registered Democrats fell, while registration increased in all other 56 counties. This is particularly odd, since Brooklyn — the home of Bernie Sanders, as well as the home of Hillary Clinton’s campaign headquarters — is a hotbed of political activity.

The New York City Board of Elections claims the number is explained by 12,000 voters moving out of the borough, 44,000 voters moved from “active” to “inactive” voter lists (by having not voted in four years or more), and 70,000 voters being taken off the “inactive” list. Michael Ryan, executive director of the city Board of Elections, said the reason Kings County has such a dramatic drop in the number of registered voters is due to election officials in Brooklyn being six months to a year behind updating voter rolls, due to elections...

For those unaware, the NYC Board of Elections is an independent bi-partisan agency with a Republican and Democratic Chair from each of the five boroughs. It tends to go heavily for patronage employees.

millions of Democratic voters who voted last in 2012 (like, say Millennials voting for Obama) had their party affiliations switched without notification. Without notification that is unless you had donated to the Hillary campaign or one of her supporting superPACs in which case you received a kindly email or letter from a Hillary PAC notifying you to reset your party affiliation before the October deadline.

of voters who moved or were deceased. We did this every election for years and those names remained on the list. After so many years where the person didn't vote, "inactive" was written by their name in the register, even those who were deceased. We asked about it and found that a family member has to present the death certificate to the county Board of Elections to have the deceased's name removed. The "inactives" may vote if they show ID.

Who would know this? Also, people come in to vote who have moved and didn't change their address with the board of elections, or they did change their address but didn't ask where their new polling place was and thought they could just vote in their old place.

It's a mess and most voters don't know what the rules are in order to keep an "active" status.

Intentional, unintentional, whatever...the point is that this should not be happening in this day and age. Is there any wonder that nobody trusts the system any longer? Forget the idiocy that is known as super delegates, they can't even get it right with registered voters.

voter rolls. The rules are clear. If you don't regard voting important enough in four years you probably were not going to vote in the fifth year either. So 44K really do not qualify to vote in this election. They can file their vote and if found eligible, they will have their votes counted BUT they must qualify by the rules. Period. This affects Hillary potential voters as well as Bernie voters. But don't count on the Sanders supporters not using this an opportunity to further smear Bernie.

Did they do urgent notification mailers to those who were subject to being scrubbed from the rolls?

Were registered voters informed by every means available to that effect?

I live in California, PSA's vis a vis Radio or TV and print media are always broadcast or widely reported wrt any changes, or potential issues concerning elections and are widely disseminated. We also receive mailers in a timely manner.

Not that there isn't any election engineering shenanigans here, but I'm wondering if Tammany Hall is still play in the City of New York?

why would they purge those who haven't voted in 4 years? some only vote every 4 years for a president.
If you think you are still registered, and no one tells you otherwise, how are you supposed to just KNOW that you have been purged?

just pathetic.
