"Show me your friends...." Was It OK that Hillary Fundraised w/ Racist Pal in 2008?

This is Who Hillary Was Friends w/ During Her 2008 Campaign:

The New York Times

May 20, 2007 Sunday

Clinton Accepts Aid From a Divisive Figure

BYLINE: By PATRICK HEALY; Katharine Q. Seelye and Katie Zezima contributed reporting from New Hampshire.

DATELINE: NEW ORLEANS, May 19

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, who has cast herself as an ally of African-Americans in rebuilding this city, this weekend accepted fund-raising assistance from a family friend who is controversial with many black and white victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The friend, Sheriff Harry Lee of Jefferson Parish, has been close to former President Bill Clinton for many years, and he is popular among some Democrats here. But Sheriff Lee has a long history of making divisive and derogatory remarks, sometimes aimed at residents of neighboring New Orleans, which is predominantly black, and his relationship with many black political leaders is turbulent.

Sheriff Lee drew notoriety shortly after the hurricane when some of his deputies helped prevent hurricane evacuees, most of them black, from crossing the Crescent City Connection bridge into Jefferson Parish. Sheriff Lee defended the move, saying his office had ''a duty to protect our people.''

Sheriff Lee was a host committee member for a fund-raiser here Friday night for Mrs. Clinton's presidential campaign. The event, which the senator attended, was closed to the news media.

Harry Lee hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton in May. Hillary Clinton was in attendance at the fundraiser.

Both Clintons are longtime friends of Sheriff Lee.

Lee passed away in October of last year. At his funeral, a letter from Bill Clinton commemorating Lee was read.

HILLARY CLINTON'S FATHER WAS RACIST & OTHER NASTY TRUTHS

Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 03:13 PM by redstate_democrat

Hugh Rodham was a staunch supporter of Barry Goldwater’s 1964 presidential campaign and remained a committed Republican until his death. Even after his daughter married Democrat Bill Clinton, he (according to Bill Clinton) "never gave up hope that his son-in-law would join him in the Republican Party and support a cut in the capital gains tax."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Ellsworth_Rodham

Clinton wrote that her father "inherited every prejudice imaginable," from his family, including against Catholics, Jews, and blacks. Hillary didn't share his prejudices, but it doesn't appear that she challenged him either, beyond joking that she would grow up to marry a Catholic Democrat.
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2007/10/21/f...

"He started out in life inheriting every prejudice imaginable in his working-class, Protestant family against Democrats, Catholics, Jews and blacks and anyone else considered outside the tribe. When I got exasperated by these attitudes during our summer visits to Lake Winola, I would announce to all the Rodhams that I intended to grow up and marry a Catholic Democrat a fate they considered the worst I could meet." Living History, p. 195

Hillary was raised, and heavily influenced by her Republican and Racist father. I wonder if her father had the same influence on her as did Rev. Wright on Senator Obama?

Hillary Clinton Compares House of Representatives to Brutal Conditions of Slavery on a Plantation

Said Clinton, "When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run, it has been run like a plantation and you know what I'm talking about..."

In response, Hillary had this to say: "People have every reason to express their opinion."

Clinton pal Right Winger/Misogynist Bob Johnson "Something in the Neighborhood"

"Hillary's Admiration of Barry Goldwater"

” I liked Senator Goldwater because he was a rugged individualist who swam against the political tide. Years later, I admired his outspoken support of individual rights, which he considered consistent with his old-fashioned conservative principles: “Don’t raise hell about the gays, the blacks and the Mexicans. Free people have a right to do as they damn please.” When Goldwater learned I had supported him in 1964, he sent the White House a case of barbecue fixings and hot sauces and invited me to come see him. I went to his home in Phoenix in 1996 and spent a wonderful hour talking to him and his dynamic wife, Susan. " Living History, pg. 31

"Hillary Clinton's Early Views on LBJ"

"One of my friends, Ellen Press, was the only Democrat I knew in my class, and she was a vocal supporter of President Johnson. Mr. Baker, in an act of counterintuitive brilliance―or perversity―assigned me to play President Johnson and Ellen to represent Senator Goldwater. We were both insulted and protested, but Mr. Baker said this would force each of us to learn about issues from the other side. So I immersed myself―for the first time in President Johnson’s Democratic positions on civil rights, health care, poverty and foreign policy. I resented every hour spent in the library reading the Democrats’ platform and White House statements."- Living History, p. 34

"Hillary and Bill Clinton's ties with Racist Sheriff Harry Lee---"

Quotes from former Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee:

"If there are some young blacks driving a car late at night in a predominantly white neighborhood, they will be stopped. There's a pretty good chance they're up to no good. It's obvious two young blacks driving a rinky-dink car in a predominantly white neighborhood -- I'm not talking about on the main thoroughfare, but if they're on one of the side streets and they're cruising around -- they'll be stopped."

"I'm going to catch that bastard, and when I catch him, he is going to be black. I just don't give a damn what people think of me anymore. If that was their daughter and we weren't doing that, they would be on our ass."

When residents of an all-black neighborhood in Avondale complained about police brutality, Lee pulled all deputies from the neighborhood.

Notably, after Hurricane Katrina, Sheriff Lee used his deputies to prevent evacuees from New Orleans to cross the Crescent City Connection Bridge into Jefferson Parish.

most of us equate Cornell West with Sheriff Lee.

I happen to feel that Cornell let his issues with President Obama get out of hand and has said some sh*t about a great man (and the greatest president) who has faced unprecedented obstacles, BUT West has usually been an honest and unafraid advocate for many.

If you think those two are the same, you need to think again.

This post illuminates the problem Sanders is having with PoC and the true disconnect, West was not only racially vile but the reasons he was that vile relates more to tickets for seats than policies and most of "US" PoC politicos know that.

Sanders having him withing 23434 feet of him and his campaign was a huge slap in the face and the other slap was doing so in front of mostly white IA and NH.

I've seen hide nor hair of West here lately

With you about West, but he's definitely off the rails. It's too bad, he was courageous and smart until he caught ODS.

I would be a tad careful talking up Bernie's tone deafness, though. I expect nothing different from, say, that demographic. On the other hand, I'm not impressed by a candidate whose support for racial justice turns into support for racial injustice the minute she is faced with an issue that makes her middle right suburban base squirm.
