Why won't Romney completely disavow Mourdock?

For someone who's shown an incredible willingness to sell out on every one of his prior beliefs, Romney sure is showing a strong commitment to sticking by a guy who proclaims children-by-rape are God's blessing.

What possible motive could Romney have for NOT seizing this moment to seem like a totally reasonable candidate on women's issues? If I were him, I'd grandstand as much as possible about what a despicable shit Richard Mourdock is, even if I completely agreed with him.

You think he's scared that his moronic Tea Party base will hate him if he does so?

HE IS LOSING. Why would disavowing a Mourdock harm him if he has Indiana wrapped up? Why would his campaign pretend they are withdrawing from NC when they are not? Why are Republicans adamantly doing GOTV efforts in the deep south? Why was Ryan campaigning in Georgia today? I think it is possible that Romney knows he is losing.
Alternatively, Mourdock has something on him!

He's stuck between losing votes from his fundy supporters, and his women supporters.

It's a "rock and a hard place" situation he's gotten himself into.

He sure as hell doesn't appear to be very intelligent.
