There's nothing remotely illegal about having offshore bank accounts.

(3,226 posts)The problem is when one does not report them to the US government every year. Also not reporting ones total income from all sources even offshore bank accounts or investments is a big IRS violation.

(3,660 posts)I have a Mongolian savings account myself. I am in fact a many times multimillionaire in tugrik terms. All not just legal but perfectly transparent. What I don't have is a shell company set up there or anyone else to funnel income and expenses through. I'm just getting a bit more than the fractional interest rates of US banks, at the risk of currency devaluation.

Just because I felt bad this had no recs. I guess not even the most ardent HRC supporters like offshore bank accounts.

In the mean time, are you seriously comparing immigrants working 2-3 jobs to send money to their bank at home for the benefit of their family, to people who stash millions in a shell company?
