Last edited Fri Mar 25, 2016, 07:27 PM - Edit history (1)
The event is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m. Pacific time, with Sanders himself arriving at the podium at about 7 p.m. Pacific time, or 10 p.m. Eastern time.

An enduring and persistent feature of Bernie Sanders campaign, almost from the very beginning, has been Bernies consistent ability to draw unusually large crowds to his events. He has filled State Fair Midways, hockey arenas, basketball field houses, school gymnasiums and auditoriums, theaters, convention halls and almost every other manner of mass public venue. From early on it seemed that he could even fill a large stadium if he wished, but he didnt make any appearances at all with the potential for such giant crowds. As early as last August, some of Bernies supporters petitioned him to begin making stadium appearances, specifically, a football stadium in Alabama where Donald Trump appeared and couldnt fill it up more than ½ way. But despite continuing to draw overflow crowds all over the country, Bernie still has not tried to fill up a 50,000+ seat venue.
Until today.
Cant help but wonder why Bernie has waited so long to appear before such potentially large crowds? Why start here, and now, in Seattle, WA, and why not earlier, such as when begged to go to Alabama in August 2015? Some of the answers seem obvious; others, perhaps, less so. The main thing is the structural design of the Sanders campaign and the purpose for which he conducts these appearances. These rallies are not simply entertainment, so that people can have a good time. These rallies are one of the fundamental organizing pillars if the campaign. They are the font from which spring Bernie Sanders social media and grassroots organizing strengths. Every mass gathering feeds the infobase of volunteers whose time and small donations power the pending political revolution.
Bernie has been turning-out huge, overcapacity crowds all over the Pacific Northwest. His organizing model has enjoyed great success in caucus states. A large trove of delegates is at stake in the caucuses in Washington tomorrow. Given all of that, the choice of Seattle for Bernies first mass stadium rally of the campaign seems increasingly like a no brainer. But Bernies campaign only scheduled the Safeco Field rally two days ago. Let us hope that is enough time to draw in a capacity crowd. What happens today and tomorrow could eventually come to be seen as part of a turning point in Bernie Sanders uphill struggle against the strongly favored front runner. But that will not come to be unless Bernie fills the house tonight.
My younger daughter is a graduate of the University of Washington and is blasting out the event info to her social media universe. Anyone else who can do so through their own contacts in Washington and Oregon should do the same. Lets help make sure we fill Safeco Field to the roof for Bernie Sanders for President.

In the meantime, Hillary will continue having her tiny, 'intimate' get-togethers with her folks.......simply put, nobody has the drive or passion to come out to stand for hours in rain & cold just to listen to her spew drivel for an hour......

I believe you do, but this worthless stat seems so very popular with the Hillary supporters.
*Will Hillary win South Carolina?
*Will Hillary win Georgia?
*Will Hillary Alabama?
*Will Hillary win Mississippi?
*Will Hillary win Louisiana?
*Will Hillary win her "Home State" of Arkansas?
In case you need the schooling, the answer is NO, not a prayer, so all those popular votes are worth NOTHING, because, in Presidential Election the states are Winner Take All. Winning the "plurality" of votes nationwide is worthless. Might as well throw them in the trash can. Ask Al Gore.
But if it makes you feel good, keep holding on to the blankie of worthless numbers.
*If you ask the hopeful, Hillary has an outside chance of winning Arkansas, but from some of us active on the ground in Arkansas, I have seen little evidence of that.

You view is REALLY short sighteded. We WILL have a General Election,

will ALSO not count. She will NEVER win those states in the General.
You had better think about that before you help dig the hole you and the rest of us won't be able to climb out of.

(7,092 posts)It is the people who show up at the polls that determine the delegates. Not the people that show up at political rallies and flood twitter with unresearched memes. Hillary supporters get to vote in the Democratic primaries. And so far, more of them have shown up.
Bernie is running for the Democratic Party nomination because there is no better vehicle for his mantra. Real, actual voters are choosing Hillary over Bernie because they see her as the better candidate. They get to vote.
Gwhittey
(1,377 posts)Hillary has gotten 4 to 1 amount of time on TV. If you don't think that is effecting the majority of voters then you are out of touch with reality. Most older people don't use internet except for email and posting pictures of grand kids. This is also why we see a large number of African Americans go for Clinton. Lack of real news sources from internet. A much larger portion of African Americans over 35(think it is 60%) do not have access to broad band internet. And you can not sit here and tell me Cable TV has no been biased in this primaries. Trump has gotten 3x more coverage than Clinton has. So one can not really tell who voters really want because a large part of voter base do not get information they need. You are going to see this in GE how Trump is going to get 24/7 positive coverage from news because they will kiss his ass because they are afraid of losing coverage of him.

LisaM
(27,875 posts)She asked why they were having another big rally (during rush hour on a Friday) when they just had one at Key Arena (about seven miles away) just a few days ago.
He actually admitted to her, "we're trying to have the biggest rally ever!"
It's very telling that the writer's daughter is media blasting all her friends to attend. If you were going to go to a rally, wouldn't it be based on deeply held beliefs or a desire to learn about a candidate? Would you only go because all your friends were going and to try and set a record for a big rally?
ljm2002
(10,751 posts)...as in, stretching and straining to find something negative to say about enthused young people encouraging others to attend a rally.
Of course Bernie and his team would like to have a record-setting rally right now. Everyone knows that Washington is pretty much make-or-break for the campaign. So it makes sense to put together a giant rally as part of the strategy. Now you think we ought to consider the motives of everyone who might attend the rally? Really? Who cares why they go anyway? Once there, they will hear Bernie's ideas, and that is the real reason for having the rally anyway.
Anyway, by the same token we might ask what are the motives of those who pay $2700 or more to hobnob with Hillary? I have never asked that question, but after reading this post, maybe I'll start hammering on that one.
LisaM
(27,875 posts)So that's why they use that figure. I'd like to point out that Hillary did three events, and two were free. She was in Everett and spoke to the machinists at Boeing, and then she was at Rainier Beach high school on Tuesday to speak to volunteers and high school kids.
Sanders just held an enormous rally a week ago. He also had one in Vancouver, Washington and one in Spokane. I am not against enthusiasm at all. I would not ever, though, attend a rally because my friends did or to set a record! And this rally is just window dressing.
ljm2002
(10,751 posts)...although it will cost a lot more than that for people to attend the event with Hillary, George Clooney and his wife:
http://www.politico.com/story/2016/03/hillary-clinton-george-clooney-fundraiser-221207#ixzz43whmyX8F
For two seats at the head table with Clinton, George Clooney and his wife, attorney Amal Clooney, at an April 15 fundraiser, a couple must contribute or raise a whopping $353,400 a huge ticket price for a hard-dollar fundraiser.
(...)
While the maximum donation to a presidential campaign is $2,700 for the primary elections (plus another $2,700 for the general), the Hillary Victory Fund can accept much larger contributions because it is a so-called joint fundraising committee that is comprised of multiple committees.
So she has events that cost some attendees hundreds of thousands of dollars to attend, and Bernie has events that anyone can attend for free -- but you have decreed that his event is mere "window dressing"?
Shall we consider what their motives are for attending Hillary's fundraiser with the Clooneys? I'm sure they're enthused, I'm just not sure about what, and the events are not done in public, so us riff raff have little chance to find out. Nor are we likely to run into a Clinton volunteer at a concert who can tell us what the "real" motives are (and BTW, your story is anecdotal, with a young volunteer speaking off the cuff, which you use to extrapolate as to the supposed motives of any attendees who might show up).
LisaM
(27,875 posts)I don't believe that, to date, Sanders has done so. Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't actually recall him ever being out in Washington state to stump for any of our candidates over the years, either, while Hillary has been out here many, many times campaigning for our Dems. We need to win more races than just the President.

Maybe people respect his philosophies AND want to have the largest rally of the entire political season, just to brag about it ....
It is possible to be thoughtful about a candidate's platform AND desire a chance to commingle with like-minded supporters for a sense of solidarity and common purpose ...
See? ... There are many ways a person could desire spectacle AND a specific brand of political thought ... And it's just as legitimate as any other choice by any other person ...

(17,226 posts)So that comes out to only $176,500/person (and you don't even have to tip!). Better now?
And since the maximum is $2700, that's all you have to come up with! $2700 for you, $2700 for your companion, and all you have to do is put the arm on 128 more of your closest friends who are also willing to shell out $2700 for the chance to look at the 8x10 glossy of you and whoever rubbing elbows with royalty! (Sure beats sharing a Happy Meal with that annoying neighbor who keeps scratching himself all during dinner.)
Betcha not even Carrot Top can command THAT many Benjamins! And you don't even have to bow or curtsy (although it might be appreciated and be a factor in your next government contract). Just cough up the bucks, Maddi. I'm not kidding.
(I would have jumped all over it, but I spent this week's discretionary budget having the Bentley serviced and hiring another servant to peel grapes.)

(244 posts)Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
