2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"You'll get your chance, I'm speaking"
I decided to go into the debate blind after work; no pre- or post-debate gibberish, no reading DU posts on it, just come in and plop my butt in front of C-SPAN and take it in.
I am interrupting that now because of the line in the title.
Eighteen minutes into the debate, Romney interrupts the president's time, demanding a question of him, then Oreilly-like, talks over him for a while. After the president finally gets to answer, Romney butts in again, taking a monologue. When hte president stands up to rebutt, Romney waves him down, and utters what might be hte most patronizing thing I've ever heard from this whole election season (barring Akin, of course.)
"You'll get your chance; I'm speaking"
I had to pause and take a breath there. That's some fucking nerve. Did anyone else catch this? Am I the only one who had a severe earch to knock him in the fucking mouth?

I think it just made him look like the rude, uppity, obnoxious, bloviating, asshole that he is. I watched for about forty minutes--all I could stand--and I got seriously sick of Rmoney butting in on the President and on the moderator, asserting that it was his "right" or something to make the rules, to butt in, to be completely rude and...well, rude whenever he felt like spewing something. If that's "presidential" then get in line behind Donald Trump!

Romney is trying to become the leader of our nation. Whatever you can say about Limbaugh, you have to admit that tiny sliver in his favor; he's not trying to do that.
So, I'm going to declare Romney the champion of this round.

Interestingly.... I read in another thread here on the DU on some of the comments in Freeperland...and they actually thought that was his strongest part of the debate...the beginning he was "strong"!!

but it really bothers me that a person would agree to the rules of the debate & then proceed to break the rules when he didn't make his point when he had his turn!
I think the moderators should get one of those very loud horns. When they explain the rules, tell them if they go beyond their time limit, they will get 10 seconds to make their point. If they haven't finished by then, they will blow the horn until they've finished talking.

(202 posts)Mr. Romney's disregard for the debate rules is not American 'exceptionalism'. It is just expecting everyone to make 'exceptions' for him.
I think the looks on the Romney family faces immediately after the debate are interesting indicators as to how well President Obama did.
tulsakatz
(3,122 posts)the horn probably is a bad idea anyway since it would annoy the audience, but they could cut off their microphone! That wouldn't bother anyone else...
oh yes, I loved the look on Ann Romney's face after the debate....talk about being a poor sport! Being pushy, demanding & refusing to follow pre-determined rules is a pretty good indication of a poor sport...

This situation at the debate is very similar.
For Mitt the Bully Boss, other people are to be controlled and bent to his will. Rules are for him to make for the other guy and to break when it comes to his own conduct.

(101,311 posts)"You'll get your chance in a moment. I'm still speaking."
Wow. To me, this was a revelatory, epochal moment. It was a look at the real Willard Romney, the Bain cutthroat who could get rich ruining lives and not lose a moment's sleep. But those people are merely the anonymous Help. The guy he was speaking to on Tuesday night is a man of considerable international influence. Outside of street protestors, and that Iraqi guy who threw a shoe at George W. Bush, I have never seen a more lucid example of manifest public disrespect for a sitting president than the hair-curling contempt with which Romney invested those words. (I've certainly never seen one from another candidate.) He's lucky Barack Obama prizes cool over everything else. LBJ would have taken out his heart with a pair of salad tongs and Harry Truman would have bitten off his nose.
...
Because, when you come right down to it, asses were kicked on Tuesday night, but not decisively. The president did a good job forcing Romney to think on his feet look out below! especially when they were both talking about gun control and Romney got asked about the Massachusetts assault weapon ban he'd signed when he was governor, and he went off on a ramble about bipartisanship and "hunting opportunities," and the president reminded him that Romney had said quite honestly that he'd abandoned that considerable achievement in order to curry favor with the NRA. But the real conclusion as regards the actual election that may have happened is that the rising Romney momentum was blunted. The one thing nobody can ever say now is that they didn't know the exact character of Willard Romney, and exactly how he feels about The Help, including that member of The Help who currently holds the job that Romney believes should have been his by virtue of his god-kissed, golden life.

During one exchange, Romney said, "You'll get your chance. I'm still speaking," as the audience in the arena seemed to gasp.
nobunnyclue
(103 posts)During those exchanges, which I think were about the economy, I thought the President looked a little "nerdy" for "taking it", but he would have looked bad / hot-headed to have gotten into a shouting match with Romney-in-charge. There was nothing to do but look tough and try to bite down. I kept thinking "Why doesn't the moderator take charge?" In reality, Romney's behavior was disrespectful to the moderator, who job it is trying to provide a balanced forum, and to the audience of undecided voters, who presumably WANT to hear both sides. It also shows how Romney was ready to aggressively push the envelope of the rules, daring someone to make him play by the rules, since he saw an upside to breaking the rules.
As an aside, I was thinking, boy, isn't that just what corporate fraud and tax evasion starts out as - the culture of "I only have to play by the rules if you make me"?
So it was SO appropriate that the moderator then got the chance to stuff Romney with his Libya mis-characterization. I thought it was totally warranted for her to step in and bring him back by that point, because he had shown that he was not going to control himself, even after a few polite reminders.
Other than that, I would have gotten great satisfaction from a "chipmunk buzzer". Whenever Mitt did his "I'm talking over you" routine, it would have been great if the moderator could have pushed a button that made his mic sound like he was talking chipmunk... cutting his mike off would be too good for a buffoon like him.
flamingdem
(39,313 posts)aggressive? How about Willard? He's a corporate clown and his disrespect looked worse with a woman than with a man. Combine that with the binders etc. and he really failed in terms of behavior.
Retrograde
(10,136 posts)Lehrer wasn't able to get him to abide by the rules then either. Romney has always been the most important person in the room (in his opinion at least) and everybody else had gosh darn better defer to him.
