She says his 15 trillion dollar tax increase will force people into poverty and despair. I told her it wont but she still wasn't buying it. She said his socialism isn't American. These people are out there and they vote. Maybe he should address these fears?

(594 posts)That WSJ (rightwing rag that it is) article claiming that Sanders' proposals would cost $15 trillion is misleading and has been debunked.

(1,021 posts)Still, I would focus on the issue of money in politics. This is perhaps the cornerstone of Bernie's campaign and its good for everyone, regardless of their political affiliation.

Why is it better to give money to for profit corporations whose only motive is to increase profits but bad to give money to a representative government whose motive is meant to be what is best for the people?
remove the cap on taxable income for social security and medicare. The rich will pay for medicare for all.
Make sure the tax dodgers pay their share.
The capitalist system we live in now is unamerican. We have a system in place where the people that work the hardest have the least to show for it. and the people at the top are only there thanks to the hard work of the people at the bottom.

(4,797 posts)And in fact, there's an additional 0.9% tax on income over 200k thanks to the ACA. Of course, none of this applies to capital gains or dividends, which is where the real problem is.

(50,271 posts)by not having huge health insurance premiums. You might also suggest she opt out of Social Security and Medicare since she's so concerned about socialism. "These people are out there and they vote." That is true. I wish they would also read about the candidates and what they stand for as well. "He's" addressed the fears, she just hasn't bothered to educate herself.

Ask her if she likes Medicare. That is also democratic socialism
so are the parks and the highways and the military and the police.
How would she like to pay a small amount more taxes and have ZERO medical expenses, no insurance, no copays, no nothing. Sounds like a good deal.
And if she can't follow this, then forget it, she is unable to think properly. Get her some good meds, or if pot is legal in your area . . . .

(80,708 posts)I mean, as long as we're pulling giant made-up numbers out of our rears.
The highly dubious "15 trillion" figure was actually supposed to be "18 Trillion", according to that bastion of progressivism the Wall St. Journal, and includes $15 Trillion on health care, neglecting of course that a Single Payer Health Care system would replace the spending we currently do on Health Care, not created some new figure of spending.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2015/09/15/no-bernie-sanders-is-not-going-to-bankrupt-america-to-the-tune-of-18-trillion/
So lets say that Bernie Sanders became president and passed a single-payer health care system of some sort. And lets say that it did indeed cost $15 trillion over 10 years. Would that be $15 trillion in new money wed be spending? No, it would be money that were already spending on health care, but now it would go through government. If I told you I could cut your health insurance premiums by $1,000 and increase your taxes by $1,000, you wouldnt have lost $1,000. Youd be in the same place you are now.
