2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI'd like to thank Black Americans, both older and younger, for never failing us at the ballot box
Without African Americans and their votes, we would not have elected any Democratic president, many senators and many congresspeople for decades now.
(I'm not meaning to patronize, but at the same time, I feel like when they are openly disparaged as a group politically, that this should be challenged)

(1,214 posts)Are you talking about on DU? Feelings are subjective and I would like to see what you're talking about.

(6,440 posts)There was a post here yesterday from someone claiming to be a young black voter (I say "claiming" because something about the post seemed a little off to me) attacking older black voters for supporting Hillary.

I usually take people at their word on DU, because it gets complicated otherwise. There are probably some freepers that have snuck by me as well as people who aren't what they say they are. Unfortunately looking like an ass goes both ways, whether someone is claiming to be something they're not, or you're making an accusation that turns out to be false.

I don't want to falsely accuse anyone, but I'm aware that anyone can claim to be anything on the Internet. You're right, it is complicated. It's hard to know where to draw the line between healthy skepticism and paranoia.
EDITED TO ADD: I've checked out the guy who made the post and he appears to be genuine. He's been around since 2008 and has made over 1200 posts, so it's not a hit-and-run.

(128,905 posts)As a tail-end boomer like our current President, for a number of years, I felt that many in the generation that preceded us (WWII babies like Jesse Jackson and John Lewis) had lost focus - mainly because their efforts actually bore fruit (see current President), with many changes in the law that positively impacted POC. Yet they had no plan to pass the torch and pivot the messaging and strategy to build upon the gains.... And like most people as time marches on, I expect "life" took over requiring them to cope with their own issues long-denied (family, health, etc) while they fought for others. Plus folks wanted to at least enjoy life without the constant struggle.
However today, with the clock turned back once more, and a younger generation now seeing why those before them did what they did, the experience of the elders should be helpful not hurtful... But I think the bigger issue is that these "elders" are experiencing the most recent version of the oft-used term "generation gap", that they themselves invoked against their own elders (the Silent Generation & earlier) during the '60s, and it will require much finesse to adapt tactics to the current, internet-focused, sound-bite obsessed environment, so that we can work towards some sort of pragmatic, measurable outcome, without all the rancor.

(128,905 posts)with that ridiculous broad-brush assertion. Am not surprised considering how DU has devolved.

(30,481 posts)You say they just did it again. They just did it again because they are true feelings. They are representing themselves as they want to be seen.
Please note, I made no negative comment about a poster. While most of us would find that thought process to be damaging, I addressed that aspect in no way.
