Nina Turner on Switching from Clinton to Sanders: He's Been a "Constant Champion" of Civil Rights

Published on Feb 23, 2016

http://democracynow.org - As Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders campaign ahead of the South Carolina primary, we speak to former Ohio state Senator Nina Turner. She made headlines in November when she switched her support from Clinton to Sanders. Turner is now a national surrogate for the Vermont senator.

in my opinion. You can't champion civil rights and accept money from Prisons For Profit. You can't be a champion for Civil Rights if you supported the death of Welfare nor strong sentences for drug offenses esp for weed. Clinton pretends to be a fighter for social justice but will never take the most important step, fight for economic justice.

Too bad she isn't yet a U.S. Senator. I'm afraid that state senator is probably not high enough office to go directly to VP. She would make a stunning VP ticket mate for Bernie Sanders!

Not out of the question, though! Why not? One reason that high office holders are traditionally chosen for VP is that they bring known and tested constituencies to the ticket--most often as to a regionally balanced ticket, sometimes to balance left-leaning vs right-leaning, etc., or to bring in a big donor draw.

Turner would bring two huge national constituencies to Bernie's ticket: women and African Americans! They don't have to be tested. She WOULD do this, just because of who she is. I can't imagine AA's not voting for her in overwhelming numbers. She would also get overwhelming support from Democratic and Independent women, and would draw women non-voters out of the woodwork as well--including many women Clinton supporters disappointed at Clinton's loss in the primaries.

Turner is also a regional rep but the power of her color and her sex is far greater and national in scope. She has not been vetted for VP in the sense that a governor or US Senator or even a House rep would be, by having run for high office before, and I don't know enough about her experience (and I don't know her age--she looks young) to say how she would stand up on that score. But since this is a true and large-scale citizen revolution, maybe it doesn't matter.

Maybe being approved by the money-changers and the Corporate Media (which vetting is mostly about, aside from vetting for potential scandals) is even a downside in this election. Here's she comes out of "nowhere"--she's black, she's beautiful, she can out-talk Amy Goodman, she's the woman all the old ladies like me wanted to see in the White House before we die, she saw through Clinton with laser-like penetration and is on our side for restoring democracy and New Deal principles!

Hey, I'm convincing myself. I need to look up things like her age.

Turner is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. She was born Nina Hudson to teenage parents on December 7, 1967, the first of seven children. Her father and mother had split up by the time she reached the age of five. At 14, she began working part-time jobs, giving “every dime” that she earned to her mother. She graduated from Cleveland’s John F. Kennedy High School in 1986. She did not continue her education immediately, instead taking a variety of jobs, including fast food and working at a Payless shoe store. While at Payless, she met Jeffery Turner, the man who became her husband.[1] Subsequently, she returned to school, receiving an Associate of Arts degree from Cuyahoga Community College, followed by a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts (1997) degree from Cleveland State University.[2] (my emphasis)

On top of this, she is a kickass feminist! She introduced a bill in the state legislature to regulate men's use of viagra the way the sexist men in the legislature were trying to regulate women's wombs!

Her political and government experience ranges from the late 90s to today, and includes legislative aide to a state senator, legislative advocate for Cleveland schools, Cleveland city council, and Ohio state senator where she was chosen as Minority Whip. She has lots of experience dealing with Republicans in a legislative setting. She ran for Ohio sec of state in 2014, and lost badly to a Republican, despite an endorsement by Bill Clinton. The issue was voting rights.

I'd say she needs more experience--5 to 10 years. I won't be an agist and say she's too young. She isn't. But her resume is not yet there, for VP. I hope Sanders gives her a really good appointment in his administration, say liaison to the AG on voting rights. And once she straightens out that goddamned mess--voting rights in this country and in Ohio--she returns to Ohio and runs for governor.

I'm impressed! What a courageous woman to buck the Clinton machine!
