Too many people here have been bullied into saying that scene looks relaxed and nonsnipery, when I think I can speak for everyone here in saying we can see the tension and fear in the faces of all the people in that clip. You can even see Hillary lean in close to examine the girl for explosives after shaking her hand.

I'd rather pay the hundreds more in Bernie's taxes if it means I save thousands and never have to deal with an insurance company ever again.

(11,012 posts)expensive ($1369 per month for), I bought into ACA insurance. It is the law and without health insurance I could easily have gone bankrupt in the event that I or my son had a medical emergency.
Now, I pay considerably less for insurance than I would have then, but I still could easily go bankrupt in the even of a medical emergency because the insurance I pay thousands a year for will not kick in until I reach a $6,000 deductible ($12,000 for the family) and then only pays 60% of the rest.
I'd much rather pay hundreds a year for better coverage under Bernie's Medicare for all than what I'm currently paying. My husband is on Medicare and it costs $1,248 per year (and the Medicare is real health care; it works!) as opposed to the $10,169 I paid last year. (The plan paid out a whopping $25 because none of my doctors took the insurance.) This year, I've gone for a lesser plan which took off about $200 per month with even less chance of it paying out. It still is eating up my retirement savings. Five years to go for Medicare and decent health coverage.
For that reason alone, Bernie is way up over Hillary in my book. Given the rest of his platform, Hillary just isn't even on the radar.
That whole "REAL" scenario is such a scam....I'm ashamed to claim to be a part of a group of people that perpetuated that lie on "US"....
I wish I could separate myself, but I am to blame as much as anyone.

(8,028 posts)Who among us could pass that litmus test? If someone asked you if you had EVER lied, who among us would be able to honestly say no?
I thought it was kind of a shitty question and she answered it in the only way she could to avoid being confronted down the road with someone's version of a half truth in her past being baked into a lie.
I thought her answer was the correct one to avoid gotcha journalism going forward.

I consider myself to be one of the most honest people you'll ever meet but if I found myself running for office, I would see that question as a trap and would avoid falling into it just like she did. No one can say that they've NEVER lied. It just can't be done.

(8,028 posts)...for a myriad of reasons. Confidentiality and security clearance being high on that list.
I have no doubt that Hillary has skeletons rumbling around in her closets. She's a career politician. That fact can be a double edged sword for someone like her because on the one hand, she has a solid resume with a lifetime of experience. On the other hand, we're living in the age of the internet, social media and unlimited information technology where a person's past is more accessible and prone to investigation than ever before.

(980 posts)Take a look at Sanders. He doesn't need to lie to try and get your vote. We have a chance to elect a trustworthy candidate that will fight for us. We voted Obama into office twice and a lot of us never thought we would have another chance to vote for someone that would go to bat for our issues.
This is that other chance and now is our time.
TeeYiYi
(8,028 posts)I love Bernie. I'll be caucusing for him in March.
That said, I'm not so naive as to believe that politicians don't lie. That's part of their job description. They'd probably prefer to think of it as 'finessing'...or 'massaging' the truth.
In the real world, times change and people and politicians evolve and adapt to that change over time. Almost every politician was against gay rights before they were for them but in the end, their evolution on that topic worked out well for me.
I expect Bernie to be our candidate but if Hillary should prevail, I'll work to get her elected and vote for her in November.

(17,256 posts)... the assertion that no one need fear wire-tapping or other surveillance except people with something to hide is correct. As for individuals, it is ludicrous to expect that no one ever lies. As for those in official positions lying officially, let me yield to Winston Churchill: "In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies." There are numerous reasons for an official to lie in his official capacity.
It is a silly question.

(29,798 posts)But the problem with the sympathy is that Bernie would be able to look the announcer in the eye and say "Sure, for example sometimes if my wife asks whether I like her outfit I might say Yes even though I don't... But! But! I have been fighting for these same policy positions for 50 years and it is self evident what I believe."
Hillary is not able to give that kind of response because it is rooted in genuine integrity.

"Well I have to tell ya,I have tried in every way I know how, literally, from my years as a young lawyer, all the way through my time as Secretary of State, to level with the American people," she says, shaking her head "no" throughout.
Shaking head No, saying Yes. We can't control our subconscious responses when we are not paying attention to them. They betray what we say. You'd think she'd have learned by now to keep her head still when telling her lies. But the subconscious always rules our responses.

(47,803 posts)I don't trust Clinton and feel she is often fast and loose with the truth.
However, in this case, I do think she was trying to answer the question honestly. I don't think anyone, much a President, can say "I'll never lie to you."
Aside from the fact that we all engage in little white lies to spare people's feelings, avoid conflict or save ourselves from embarrassment, a President may have special reasons for lying.
In an extreme example, suppose someone had publicly asked President Obama if there had been any progress in the hunt for Osama bin Laden in the week prior to his killing. Obama would have been perfectly justified in lying and saying "No we have no leads."

No, fucking Jayzuz, no!
The people know it's not working.
Anybody that does not have millions in their offshore accounts knows this as a fact.
The market crash destroyed a lot of American's futures: jobs, homes, savings flushed. But Wall Street was saved.
Student debt is crippling the futures of graduates...the ones lucky enough not working as baristas, and it will continue to do so as long as high college debt us not addressed. What politician benefits from an electorate suffering so.
And the political system? It's in Wall Street's (AKA corporate America) gold lined pockets.
Peopledon't feel, Hillary, they know full well that the ststem is rigged against them.
And fuck Scott Pelly. Sanders and Trump are not harvesting the same supporters.
Sanders deals with the reality of a corrupt system to make it better while Trump plays to the bigots and hatred.

That being said, I don't think her answer was a train wreck. Everyone has lied about something and will lie about something down the road. If she'd said "I haven't and won't lie to the American people about anything" then that would just be another lie on the pile. She answered it as best she could without giving her possible GE opponent a commercial soundbite and I have no problem with that.

Clinton: Well I have to tell you,I have tried in every way I know how, literally, from my years as a young lawyer, all the way through my time as Secretary of State, to level with the American people, says Clinton, shaking her head no throughout..
Question: You talk about leveling with the American people. Have you always told the truth?
Clinton: I've always tried to. Always. Always.
Question: Some people are going to call the wiggle room you just gave yourself, "always tried to" --
Clinton: No. I've always tried --
Question: Jimmy Carter's "I will never lie to you."
Clinton: You know you're asking me to say, "Have I ever." I don't believe I ever have. I don't believe I ever have. I don't believe I ever will. I'm going to do the best I can to level with the American people.

(357 posts)When you watch HRC lying she does it seamlessly. Her statements are clear and powerful, and if you believe them they are convincing.
It's only when you get the reputation of being a liar that such people start getting questioned and challenged...
HRC is way past that point, and this of course is why her ratings on 'trustworthiness' are lower than anyone who's ever been elected to the Presidency. It's also one key reason that she's NOT electable.

Pathological liars
From this link: https://www.achievesolutions.net/achievesolutions/en/Content.do?contentId=9704
Summary:
Rooted in poor self-esteem
Lying for many reasons, or no reason at all
Not officially a mental disorder
Suggests deeper psychological problems
Almost everyone has encountered a pathological liarthe type of person who in one conversation claims to have dined with the Queen of England, danced back-up for Madonna, and dived with great white sharks. The problem for pathological liars is that their attempts to impress often backfire.
Instead of getting the love and attention they seek, they usually earn scorn and ridicule. A habit of lying can quickly ruin a persons reputation and interfere with his ability to establish meaningful relationships.
Some of the hallmarks of pathological liars include telling outrageously dramatic stories, telling fibs that are easily disputed, changing stories when challenged and, most importantly, lying even when theres no apparent benefit in telling the lie. Compulsive liars lie for many reasons, including no reason at all, but most often they lie to:
feel admired
gain popularity
control and manipulate
compensate for feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem
cover up failures
Although not officially designated as a mental disorder, pathological lying is often seen as the tip of the iceberg for deeper psychological problems including narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

(9,385 posts)as if talking to a child. That's when it says to me, "I can put this bullshit over on you... now don't you want to nod with me, yes you do". She's hardcore selling then.
The bugged out eyes reads as stonewalling to me. "I won't tell you" whatever it is. Or "I insist that you believe what I'm saying because I'm being so dramatic". The shrugged shoulders even more stonewalling. That reads like "well then, eff off".
In the second video, she looked down the whole time she was saying she "made a mistake". I don't think she believed it was a mistake, and she hated characterizing it as one. I doubt she admits that she ever makes mistakes in other situations.
Her voice reads phony to me too, artificially loud a lot of times (not in the videos, at appearances). I'll bet she can be really surly when crossed in real life. She seems very entitled, and comes off as if anything she wants to do is A-ok by definition, just because it's what she wants.
I never really looked at it closely and thought about it specifically before, but that's how it comes across to me.
