“Sanders doesn't have his finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing, he’s been saying the same thing for 30 years,” he added.

The effect of Sanders entering into the race hasn’t just been to change the conversation over policies. According to Wilson, it has put under the microscope the connection between the working class and the Democratic Party.

“The Democratic Party went away from the working class a long time ago, particularly with the growing importance of money in politics. The high cost of politics has meant that politicians have gone to big business rather than their supporters to fund their campaigns,” he said.

“Sanders campaign is calling into question that relationship between the labor movement and the Democratic Party. Too often unions have given candidates a blank check. Here’s our support, except we don't get anything in return apart from empty promises. That’s an abusive relationship,” he added.
