Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders at the MSNBC Democratic primary debate, held at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire, on Feb. 4, 2016.

Going into Thursday night's Democratic presidential debate, pretty much everyone expected Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to criticize Hillary Clinton for accepting donations from Wall Street. And, indeed, he eventually brought up the millions of dollars her super PAC has collected, in part from donors in finance.
So, howd she respond? In part, by criticizing Sanders for supporting a bill her own husband, former President Bill Clinton, signed into law. And weirdly, it was kind of effective.
Clinton started off by taking umbrage at Sanders insinuation that anybody who ever took donations or speaking fees from any interest group has to be bought. Which, all right, fine. You will not find that I ever changed a view or a vote because of any donation that I ever received, she added. Which, again, all right, fine. But then she moved onto a more interesting point:
While were talking about votes, youre the one who voted to deregulate swaps and derivatives in 2000, which contributed to the overleveraging of Lehman Brothers which was one of the culprits that brought down the economy. Im not impugning your motive because you voted to deregulate swaps and derivatives. Im not saying you did it for any financial advantage. What weve got to do as Democrats is to be united to actually solve these problems and what I believe is I have a better track record and a better opportunity to actually get that job done.

(45,251 posts)When the House voted on that bill, it was fine. President Clinton, Summers, Greenspan and the usual suspects lobbied the Senate hard for that bill, the White House, because Bill wanted to be able to claim a veto proof majority. A Senate compromise added the mischief. The people who wanted that bill, including Clinton, engaged in shenanignans, including dumping the bill into a long bill with about 11 appropriations bills in it. It came down to voting yes on the whole shebang or letting the Republicans shut down government.

(5,856 posts)in subsequent debates, but it will be a tight needle to thread. Stating the obvious about Bill signing the repeal of Glass-St is one thing, but accusing him of conspiring with Republicans and the banks is another. He, like Obama, are still liked within the party.

BTW, I did not post that Bill conspired with Republicans.

(45,251 posts)Point is, I never said he plotted with Republicans.
In hindsight, I would not put it past him. Did not mean to "put words in your mouth"
