Well, I just outed myself as an atheist. I was...UPDATE

Last edited Tue Dec 18, 2012, 09:35 PM - Edit history (1)

getting so sick of all the "we need to put god back in our schools" meme friends were putting on facebook. I finally had enough and fired back. We'll see what happens, wish me luck! But I do feel cleansed.

Well it's been about 24 hours and all I got for my efforts was one "Read the bible" and total silence. Not good morning (which I usually get every day from one particular friend) nothing, zip. So I'm wondering if I'm getting snubbed or are they taking the time to think about this. Hmmmmmm

Atheists don't wear it on their faces. You walk into a store and the clerks don't know, not like being black. You stroll down the street and no one knows, they don't hold their purse tighter. You apply for a job and they don't know. Not like being black.

But you can get quite a stigma attached when some people do know. But not as many as you might think.

Southern Baptist, end of times, bodies being raptured, laid it on real thick.

I just wanna know why you'd need your body in heaven? And unless you're a supermodel, why would you want it?

Dear God,
Why do you allow such violence in Schools?

Dear Student,

Dear God,
I think I have the wrong God.
Mine isn't petty, passive aggressive,
Or believe that killing the innocent
Serves to punish someone else.
Furthermore, no one is keeping
You out of the schools. Educate yourself.
Gods are expected to know things.

Dear Student,
Umm, can I take a message?

This needs improvement, but it would be a fun thing to post in response.... It presumes the existence of a God, but we have to work with what we are given...

It needs a little work. God's last answer isn't the climax I was expecting. I suppose you could end it with the student's response.

We need a better way to say: "nobody is keeping you out of schools", too.

Then you have to put it on a placard like the ee-cards or that picture of Willy Wonka that shows up every day. Let's keep this kicked.

Dear God,
Does that mean all the things said by Christisans like "God is Everywhere" and "Jesus is always at your side" are lies?

Dear Student,
Apparently.

The more people who do this, the better for all concerned. Cognitive dis the hell out of folks. People who need god and religion the most usually just feel a need to be led.

Lead!

Sometimes I wonder if I am my christian friends' token atheist. Up until my mom died a couple years ago I just put "None" under religion but the day after her funeral (At a hell-fire, fundamentalist, independent baptist church) I changed it to Agnostic Atheist. My brothers already knew anyway and most of my peers did too but I got a lot of "tut tuts" from high school friends (I graduated from a private, christian school 31 years ago) who are still way off deep into the jesus. But they periodically ask me things and comment on my posts and it often sounds to me like they are thinking "hey, look at me! I'm being open minded and talking to hell-bound sinner!".

I usually don't comment on their inanities and platitudes to each other but every once in a while I spout off and get the silent treatment for a while. I find I like the silent treatment some. lol

You will probably be surprised that many people will not mind. Some will not "really" believe you. A few will try to convince you. But if it is like the people who I know (and I personally know only one other atheist), they just respect my wishes and leave religion out of the conversations.

But there are those few who are always sending me "Jesus loves you" emails. I hit delete. I don't respond. If I did, they would no longer be friends, because I would be scathing. Not worth it.

I hope you encounter tolerance.
