Hold Onto Your Hats: JWST Unveils Unprecedentedly Crisp View of Uranus And Its Rings

20 December 2023
By PAUL SQUIRE & MORGAN MCFALL-JOHNSEN, BUSINESS INSIDER

Uranus is beautiful. (NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope)

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has done it again.

An enhanced image from the high-powered telescope orbiting in space shows the planet Uranus in stunning new detail.

The photo captures the icy blue planet's elusive rings, atmospheric storms, and many of its 27 moons.

Webb snapped this image of Uranus and some of the planet's 27 moons, like Puck, Rosalind, and Juliet. (NASA, ESA, CSA, STScl)
On Monday, NASA the image, which expands on a snapshot revealed earlier this year of the icy tilted world.

The images are a massive step up from the Hubble Space Telescope's attempt, which can barely make out one faint ring around Uranus.

The headlines made me hope my ass and possible rings there had bit been compromised. 🤔.
But seriously this is awesome. I watched a science show recently detailing how the rings were made and exist. This photo is really cool. Thanks for sharing.

Old astronomer trick. It's what I do. One time I was watching a lunar eclipse and Uranus was just off to the side, a tiny blue jewel in the FOV of my ETX.

Always have, always will. That's how I learned to say it, and I've never felt any need to change.

Besides, wikiHow says that's how astronomers and physicists pronounce it:
https://www.wikihow.com/Pronounce-Uranus

If it's good enough for Carl Sagan, Bill Nye, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson, it's good enough for me!

I mean, yea, there's some water there, and Uranus probably has more than we have on Earth, but it's frozen in the atmosphere.
