The Second COVID-19 Shot Is a Rude Reawakening for Immune Cells.

Side effects are just a sign that protection is kicking in as it should.

'At about 2 a.m. on Thursday morning, I woke to find my husband shivering beside me. For hours, he had been tossing in bed, exhausted but unable to sleep, nursing chills, a fever, and an agonizingly sore left arm. His teeth chattered. His forehead was freckled with sweat. And as I lay next to him, cinching blanket after blanket around his arms, I felt an immense sense of relief. All this misery was a sign that the immune cells in his body had been riled up by the second shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, and were well on their way to guarding him from future disease.

Side effects are a natural part of the vaccination process, as my colleague Sarah Zhang has written. Not everyone will experience them. But the two COVID-19 vaccines cleared for emergency use in the United States, made by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, already have reputations for raising the hackles of the immune system: In both companiesí clinical trials, at least a third of the volunteers ended up with symptoms such as headaches and fatigue; fevers like my husbandís were less common.

Dose No. 2 is more likely to pack a punchóin large part because the effects of the second shot build iteratively on the first. My husband, whoís a neurologist at Yale New Haven Hospital, is one of many who had a worse experience with his second shot than his first.

But much like any other learning process, in this one repetition is key. When hit with the second injection, the immune system recognizes the onslaught, and starts to take it even more seriously. The bodyís encore act, uncomfortable though it might be, is evidence that the immune system is solidifying its defenses against the virus.

ďBy the second vaccine, itís already amped up and ready to go,Ē Jasmine Marcelin, an infectious-disease physician at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, told me. Fortunately, side effects resolve quickly, whereas COVID-19 can bring on debilitating, months-long symptoms and has killed more than 2 million people.'>>>

1. This is good to know

We had our first Moderna last week, and the second shot coming up in April. I plan to have some easy food in the fridge in case we are hit hard.

Thanks for posting this.

6. Hubster had his second Moderna yesterday.

His arm was mildly sore last night. Today, he has no symptoms at all and, because he worries, and because he is married to a woman with a history of crazy reactions to medications and vaccinations, heís now worried the dose didnít take. I read this article to him, but he still isnít convinced.

8. So if someone doesn't have any reaction,

does it mean the immune system isn't ramping up?

I haven't had either shot, so I have no personal experience to relate.

think every body is different and reacts differently. I donít think it necessarily means your body isnít reacting to it or ramping up a defense.

12. I felt and sounded like a cat in a sack being beaten with a pipe

Chills, leg cramps, and pain near major joints; hips, elbows, shoulders. It felt like bruising.

It didn't start right away, but days after the second shot and lingered for a few days.

It's over now, and well worth it.

13. I had no side effects from the first shot other than a sore shoulder the next day. The 2nd

had me feeling really tired for a couple of days and a couple nights of pulling the covers up and then kicking them off again. 48 hours after the 2nd shot, the side effects were over.

26. I had the J&J this past Wednesday afternoon.

I had chills the evening of the shot and some body aches throughout that first night. I woke up feeling great the next morning but went down right at the 24 hour mark with fatigue, chills and a fever...not horrible but I definitely didnít feel well. I slept 10 hours straight and hit the ground running Friday. Iíve felt great since.

I havenít had a shingles shot....I guess thatís next!

17. I wonder

If the people who experience bad side effects of the second dose would have had a bad case of COVID. And, conversely, if the ones who had no vaccine side effects would have had a mild case of COVID.

21. Not based on my personal experience. I felt "sicker" (but only for a day or so)

after my second Pfizer vax than at any point when I had covid. Higher fever, which eventually "broke" abruptly leaving me drenched in sweat, teeth-chattering chills, hands so cold during the chills that I had to warm them up with a heating pad. All of these were much more intense than during actual covid. Threw up once after the second vax, never during covid. Coughed a lot during covid, never post-vax. Despite the discomfort post-vax, I didn't really mind so much because I knew that is was a possibility, was not in any way dangerous, and simply indicated a robust immune reaction, which is something I wanted.

No side effects so far other than a little pain from getting a shot.

Incredible operation. Lots of volunteers and National Guard.

is you have already been exposed to the SARS-COV-2 virus and either didn't develop CoViD-19 at all or were asymptomatic.

37. Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

I'm assuming that if someone has already had COVID-19 (even without realizing it), their body is already primed to repel the virus the next time around. So the vaccine tricks the body into mounting a strong defense right away.

38. That's my understanding of it

using the one quarter I took of immunology and virology back in the late 80s.

Guess that's a better background than being a YouTube virologist or immunologist.

One of my relatives is heading up the vaccine distribution in a fairly good sized city. He's heard of people really getting the snot kicked out of them with the first dose. The professionals he's working with think that prior exposure is the probable cause of that response.
