Here's what you need to know.
MICHELLE STARR 12 APR 2018
The Sun is getting up to shenanigans again, and once again Earth is going to be feeling the effects. Coronal holes have opened up on the solar surface, sending geomagnetic storms in our direction.
Holes on the Sun might sounds a bit scary, but they're very common, particularly during the solar minimum. This is the quiet period of the Sun's 11-year activity cycle, which we're currently in.
Although sunspots and solar flares are fewer, and generally smaller when they do occur during the solar minimum, that doesn't mean that we can't be hit by geomagnetic storms.
This is because of coronal holes. These are cooler, less dense regions of plasma and open magnetic fields.

(7,911 posts)...the whole planet could be without electricity for years. Most of the transformers would blow, and without electricity, manufacturing replacements would take a very long time. The whole electrical infrastructure would have to be bootstrapped from the ground up, taking several years, if it could even be accomplished at all.
Meanwhile, think of how many people would die due to lack of water, food, medications, heating, etc. What percentage of our population is elderly and unable to take care of themselves? What percentage require daily medication, like insulin, for example, to survive? What percentage have serious mental health issues that would drive them over the edge? I read somewhere that 25% of the population of the U.S. doesn't know how to boil water of fry an egg, and 20% don't know how to use a can opener.
On top of that, every nuclear power plant in the world requires electrical power for cooling. The spent fuel pools would overheat in a matter of days, and nuclear explosions would blossom everywhere, spreading deadly radiation all over the planet.
If the power were to stay out for 6 months we could easily lose 50% to 80% of the population to thirst, starvation, medical emergencies, suicides, radiation poisoning, and monumental stupidity.
Let's hope we don't take a direct hit.
