/
A mysterious wooden idol found in a Russian peat bog has been dated to 11,000 years ago - and contains a code no one can decipher.
The Shigir Idol is twice as old as the Pyramids and Stonehenge - and is by far the oldest wooden structure in the world.
Even more mysteriously, it is covered in what experts describe as encrypted code - a message from a lost civilisation.
Professor Mikhail Zhilin of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Archeology said: 'The ornament is covered with nothing but encrypted information. People were passing on knowledge with the help of the Idol.'
Russian experts think that the strange carvings may contain a belief system, the equivalent of the Bibles Genesis.
The statue had been dated as being 9,500 years old, after its discovery in a peat bog 125 years ago.
But new research in Mannheim, Germany used Accelerated Mass Spectrometry n small fragments of the sculpture, and found it is at least 11,000 years old.

(6,409 posts)The wood is 11,000 years old. When forgers create "old" documents, they use old paper and old ink. The Russians are fond of practical jokes of this sort.

(20 posts)Or have they lied to you any more than, say the American government has lied to Russians? Do you think it is okay for mobs to drive out legally elected Presidents (as happened in Ukraine), or for Army Generals to overthrow legally elected Prime Ministers with the help of foreign intelligence services (as happened in Iran)?

Urfa Man totem at Gobekli Tepe n is 13,500 years old, the oldest statue ever found. Also, he is holding balls with both hands. he is six feet tall.
Notice his woven V neck shirt......... that's pretty advanced clothing which means technology above normal......... Then notice his shaved head and face.
That's pretty unusual too since he didn't have a safety razor or a Gillette blade..
The Russian find has been around for a while and confirmed by western scientists and scholars way before the Soviet Union of Modern Russia so that's just anti science I've read in this thread. The Max Planck Institute Mannheim, Germany is one the most advanced institute in the world that verifies Dating, DNA and nuclear physics...........they tested the wooden statue's age there.......

(1,432 posts)The whole structure makes me question everything I've been taught about the origins of human civilization. I'm not sure I agree with the analysis that this was a temple, but no matter what purpose it served, it took some superb engineering skills to build.

I mean, come on .... a belt buckle? Now where did he get that from?
There is just too many things about that place that over
turns any conventional thought about our development. Building these structures took massive organizational skills, planning and development.
The relief stone work is another mind blower plus purposefully burying the whole damn thing.... yep its fascinating.

Where?
Looks just as likely to be something like a necklace.
Or a styalized drape from a large slit of a neckline.... like a poncho or something.
Doesn't have to be woven.... if it's soft leather.
Anyway.... both statues are awesome!!!!

(12,809 posts)Just curious.
Take Greek and Roman statues from antiquity, for example: they're all white. Marble statues, for example, carved with great attention to detail, capturing an exact likeness of their subjects, and yet no color. I was surprised to learn from a teacher back in school that they were likely painted when new. Which kinda made sense to me, as the white eyeballs could always seem so lifeless. And yet now, centuries later, the paint is gone, leaving us with the classic white.
Maybe in a similar manner all we're seeing of Urfa Man is what's left after the ravages of time. Perhaps he was intended to sport a wig made from animal fur...
Although... his eyes are still a brilliant blue.

(1,053 posts)I don't know much about Old World archaeology, but there are a few things
that popped into my mind when I read this short article.
First, AMS dating dates when the material an object is made out of died. So if the
AMS dating is correct, it's perhaps best to say (and given my limited understanding of
what is known of the artifact) that the statue can be no older than 11,000....but may
be younger. It is possible to use wood long after it has died to create something, or
to recycle old wood. For example, my cousin reclaims old wood from demolished barns
to craft things, thus, I have a birdhouse made in the last 10 years that has a
carbon dating signature that may be many decades old.
Second, AMS dating is not infallible. Given that this object was found in a peat bog,
an area high in slow decaying carbon, it's possible that there could be contamination
from the surrounding matter.
Again, I'm neither an Old World academic or an AMS specialist, so I can't be sure.
I would expect that they have compensated for these issues. Still considerations
though.
