All right, it might be good. Weird to think the original was over 30 years ago.

(40,416 posts)Too bad it won't be on PBS. Commercials will degrade the narrative with stupid interruptions. That is a big mistake.

(25,966 posts)airing it on a major network may increase the potential audience. I bet the number of people who tune into Fox but wouldn't tune into PBS is a lot larger than the number of people who would tune into PBS but not tune into Fox.
My main worry is... there is a fine line between "presenting science for a lay audience" and "dumbing it down." Sagan's original stayed on the right side of that line, but will the reboot? Something about this trailer suggests it will, but I'm suspicious. Because get off my lawn.

(3 posts)Neil has been wanting to do a continuation of Cosmos for a long time and honestly there's no one else that could do it. Neil Tyson helps people understand the abstract concepts of physics and astronomy better than anyone I can think of. He really makes you feel a part of what it is he's talking about. I reccomend watching any of his interviews on the Daily Show or Colbert. You'll see that there's no one better. It helps that someone with the same passion for this show, Seth MacFarlane , is executive producing and bankrolling the project. I'm crazy excited for this show!

(25,966 posts)1970s fashion aside, it really didn't seem as dated as I was expecting, even though science has progressed plenty in 30 years. I decided it is because the show mostly discusses established knowledge, and little or none of it was invalidated in the last 30 years, just added to.
Still, there's plenty of opportunity to leverage the latest knowledge for a remake. In particular, state of the art evo/devo would provide great additions to the discussions of evolution. And of course cosmology, space probe tech and astronomy could be updated in all kinds of cool ways.
Super curious to see what he does with it
