2. Oh, the irony. It was not that far when Rashida Tlaib accused Jews of dual loyalty

Aug 2019

Four days on the job, Palestinian Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib from Michigan accused Jews of dual loyalty, an anti-Semitic canard, in a tweet on Sunday.

In response to Democratic opposition to a bill that included anti-BDS language, Tlaib wrote:

“They forgot what country they represent. This is the US where boycotting is a right & part of our historical fight for freedom & equality. Maybe a refresher on our US Constitution is in order, then get back to opening up our government instead of taking our rights away.”

"They" was an obvious reference to Jewish Americans, though it was Sen. Marco Rubio, a non-Jew who had inserted the language in the bill.

It is striking that Tlaib feels emboldened to use such language, perhaps suspecting that her base will support her. The Democratic party did not condemn the congresswoman for her remarks.

"Some of his family is Jewish!"

So, it's not anti-Semitic.

"He's just clarifying what a Jew's position should be about Israel."

So, it's not anti-Semitic.

"He's only talking about a specific group of Jews, not all Jews."

So, it's not anti-Semitic.

" (insert Jew) has said this isn't anti-Semitic."

So, it's not anti-Semitic.

"People are only calling this anti-Semitic, because they don't agree with his position and dislike him."

So, it's not anti-Semitic.

"Just because a number of Jews, who have pointed out the historical significance of this canard, say it is anti-Semitic, doesn't make it so."

So, it is not anti-Semitic.

"Why is it when he discusses Israel and Jews' relations to Israel, he is accused of anti-Semitism? Conflation!"

So, it is not anti-Semitic.

"Look at what the other side has said in the past. How is this any worse? It isn't! Where were the protests then?"

So, it is not anti-Semitic.

I, and many Jews, have heard this song before. We know all the lyrics (excuses). They aren't new to us. Attacking the loyalty of Jews for simply being Jews or using Israel as a measurement of Jewish loyalty, is anti-Semitic!

Bookmark. This song will get played again!
