Modesty, a “laughable non-problem” for Pagans?

June 27, 2012 By Kris Bradley

I admit, I read the Friendly Atheist blog on a regular basis. While I’m obviously not an atheist, I enjoy reading another point of view, especially when it’s as well written and thought-provoking as this blog tends to be. Today, however, the post was called “The Ugly Side of Modesty, written by Amanda. It’s main focus was a website called Secret Keeper Girl, a Christian website that was created in 2009 “in an effort to present a petition to both the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the American Apparel and Footwear Association with motivation to be more aware of what they create and market, and how it affects our daughters.” One of their goals was to encourage shoppers to shop at stores that were “Consistently offering age-appropriate clothing for its target market.”

Growing out of this, the site developed “The Modesty Project”, a program focused on helping young girls and their parents buy age-appropriate clothing. As the website states,

“We believe that the fashion industry is pressuring little girls to grow up too fast! The findings of two years of study by an APA (American Psychological Association) task force state that clothing, which makes girls appear older, and the associated marketing efforts are linked to eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression. Ironically, this early sexualization presented to young girls also has “negative consequences on girls’ ability to develop healthy sexuality.” We would like to request that industry leaders send a message to the fashion industry that we want to purchase age-appropriate clothing for our little girls and would like the fashion industry to evaluate the clothing they design and the messages they send to our girls through advertising.”

On the website is a section where a girl can “test” to see if her clothing is appropriate, along with tips for creating a cute outfit that’s more modest.

As that is an abomination and I'm pretty sure the penalty for abominating around town is death by some sort of insanely cruel method.
