Beck Rips Family Guy for Jesus Episode, Calls SNL a Group of PussiesBeck said thats not courageous satire because it is not brave to do the things that the elite and the powerful agree with.
He was absolutely offended at how Family Guy (a show known for pushing every single boundary possible regardless of taste) made Jesus a joke. And Beck actually went so far as to say this might be on par with taking Jesus and recrucifying him before the eyes of a gawking public:
Why not just put him up on the pillar again? Why not just whip him and beat him? Why not just publicly humiliate him? Why not just tear his clothing from him, spit on him, and when he asks for water we give him vinegar?
At one point, Beck took a detour to also rip into the cast of Saturday Night Live for being the biggest group of pussies on the planet. He said they dont try anything brave with their political satire to stick it to people in power.
I thought the episode was pretty damn funny, but I knew it was going to get some hackles up. So did MacFarlane (if you saw it, Peter gives the address to write to to stop the show).

(146,218 posts)In your enthusiasm to make this an anti-christian post, even though NO CHRISTIAN ON THIS SITE IDENTIFIES WITH GLENN BECK, you really put you foot in it.
Sorry for the screaming, but what you have done here is wrong.
Goblinmonger
(22,340 posts)Because he is. I know that it is randomly OK to bash Mormon's on here, but they are Christians. So how was my Subject line wrong? He is a Christian. He does have a giant stick up his ass. And he doesn't like Family Guy.
Also, please show me where I even hinted that ANYONE ON THIS SITE IDENTIFIES WITH GLENN BECK.

(146,218 posts)You know perfectly well that most people consider these different categories, including Mormons.
What a bunch of shit this post is. A story worth noting ruined by your prejudice.

Goblinmonger
(22,340 posts)tell me I wasn't a Christian. That was false. It's also false to say a Mormon isn't Christian.
Just because some people here feel it is OK to single out Mormons as something "not Christian" doesn't make them right. Nothing in my subject line is wrong.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)It was your decision to make it intentionally inflammatory and aimed at him as a "christian" that is at issue.
IIRC, just recently there was an altered headline in which some people apparently thought "anti-christian" meant atheist. Even though it didn't meant that at all, the changing of the headline became an issue. Were you involved in that conversation?
You have made your point and it's glaringly obvious what it is.
I am sure this will go exactly as you have anticipated, but I am really disappointed and out of here.

(13,496 posts)(Though I am now!!! I'm terrible at taking my own advice.)
It's obviously a riff on Stone's insistence that another poster (Goblin?) not speak to him because he used a word Stone Space didn't like. I believe the word was used in as little of an offensive way as that pejorative racial insult could be used, and the poster was quoting something or saying how the use of the word was inappropriate, but Stone insisted that the poster never speak to him again until he denounced all use of the word, implying that the poster was throwing around racial slurs.
And the "M" word is militant.
Stone Space pulled the same schtick (earnestly? who knows), and Trotsky's just giving it back.
Though I can see why the insistence on the use of "Militant" atheist might read as parody and irk some of the atheists on our board.
But, yeah, not all those who we think are our friends on message boards are acting in good faith.

(22,340 posts)we objected to calling people who are obviously Christian, and probably in their warped minds think they are true Christians, Anti-Christians.
And whether you intended to or not, you appeared to defend the OP title in that other thread.
Goblinmonger
(22,340 posts)What has been made clear is that I don't need to use the headline in my OP Subject line. And I can use whatever I want when I do. You did not seem to care when it was done by someone else. Why by me? Either it is something we can do in here or we can't. And there is NOTHING in my subject line that is wrong. He is a Christian. He does have a giant stick up his ass. He does hate the show. Please tell me where any of that is wrong. To say that Mormons aren't Christian seems very prejudicial.

You really are upset that you spent 2.5 seconds before you saw what the thread was about.
I click on threads all the time only to find I am not interested.
And if you are so uninterested in Beck, why are you even commenting?
stone space
(6,498 posts)But I don't.
I generally run into Beck's name on internet boards like this.
Not on TV.
How do you even know to click on them?
There are many more folks who are actually interested in Beck who are totally unaware of the existence of this secret Beck thread than there are folks uninterested in Beck who accidentally wasted 2.5 seconds on their lives by clicking on this thread.
I'd worry more about the former than the latter.

(23,664 posts)The title promised things that were never delivered. I hoped to learn what some idiot Christian found objectionable about a Family Guy episode about Jesus.
Instead I found that I had bumbled into a rhetorical argument about how many Mormons could dance on the head of a pin if their religion permitted them to dance with Christians.
I bailed before I wasted a huge amount of time on it but I feel I am worse for the experience.
Goblinmonger
(22,340 posts)I think the objection Beck had to the episode was pretty clear.
Did you watch the episode? I knew as soon as it started that there would be a shit storm somewhere. Beck didn't pop into my head (generic Fox pundit did--which is pretty close).
My main question is if the reaction to the episode is the one that Seth wanted. I think he's good enough at what he does to tailor his work to get the intended response.

(9,796 posts)I find that Family Guy stopped being funny around season 5 or so, with less worthwhile episodes as the seasons went on. But Beck is just being stupidly hyperbolic. Even in the years I watched it, Family Guy took the piss out of pretty much every religion.
Dorian Gray
(13,496 posts)but I have to admit that some of the religious ribbing and stuff makes me uncomfortable.
Prophet 451
(9,796 posts)It's more that the show seemed to get more mean-spirited as it went on. Things like, you remember that there was a Jewish character, Mort or something? Well, at one point, jokes about him were mostly about his timidity. But as time went on, jokes about him shifted to be mostly about his Jewishness. And the Lois of teh early seasons was a Mama Bear about her kids. When a rich princess snubbed Meg, Lois made plans to ruin her (by sending Quagmire to her party, IIRC). But in the later seasons, Lois because as nasty to Meg as everyone else was. And Stewie went from being a would-be supervillain to just being a stereotype of a flamboyantly gay man.
Dorian Gray
(13,496 posts)I hate that they're all mean to Meg. That bugs. And Stewie was better as a super villain.
I don't watch as much now as I used to, but that's only because my four year old has shown interest in it when it's on, and it's not appropriate for her. LOL.
Funniest line was the "I do not care for The Godfather. It insists upon itself." And the never-ending fight with the chicken. And all the 80s references. He does those things well.
