Its no surprise to get a phone call from a fired-up Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation and a frequent flyer when it comes to criticizing the Air Force Academy over religious issues.
But, on Wednesday, Weinstein broke new ground hes mad at evangelical atheism in a hallway of the academys Fairchild Hall.
Its Ask an Atheist Day, Weinstein said as he built up to the machine-gun delivery deriding commanders including Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson for fostering a climate of religious intolerance.
What if this was ask a Muslim Day or ask an Evangelical Christan Day? Weinstein said.

(2,262 posts)Seemingly against Constitutional prohibitions on official religion, for centuries military bases have allowed chaplins - usually Protestant ministers, and Catholic priests - a more or less permanent place on military bases. And even give them a nominal military rank and uniform.

I think he wants to make sure he is consistent and that's a very good thing, imo.

(2,262 posts)It WOULD be good if the presentation of Evangelicals and Atheists WAS equal, and consistent. But due to the permanent and funded presence of Christianity on military bases, the presentation of Christianity (including Evangelicalism) dwarfs the presentation of Atheism; by a thousand to one.
Once again the perpetrator is blaming the victim.

(146,218 posts)That is precisely why he is consistent.
The perpetrator is not blaming the victim. The effective activist is taking a position that no one should be able to do this when it comes to matters of religion.

(5,018 posts)it would be a good idea to have a world religions class that addressed the major belief systems and address what an atheist is, in high school preferably. Would be helpful for members of other minority belief systems as well. That way people don't have to have "ask a" days to address misconceptions and prejudice, and which can be used to push an agenda as well and so won't be allowed in the military.
