When will Carlos Correa officially become a Met? It's the biggest question in baseball right now. While there is perhaps a possibility that the megadeal between the two sides falls through due to the Mets' concern with Correa's right ankle, a resolution that makes both the player and the team happy still seems realistic. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal said Tuesday that he assumes everything will get resolved this week. But while Correa could very well end up with the Mets, the terms of his massive contract are expected to look "dramatically different" once everything is official.
"It's not going to be 12 years, $315 [million] guaranteed," Rosenthal said. "The question again is to what extent does the language change, does the deal change?
Rosenthal says the Mets and Correa are still working on a restructured deal and that there is "no indication that [the Mets] want to back out of the deal." Instead, they are searching for a middle ground that satisfies both parties. Rosenthal mentions the possible insertion of contract language
stating, for example, if Correa spends a certain amount of time on the injured list due to a problem with the body part in question, it would result in a voiding of future years or a loss of guaranteed money.
"Obviously, if you are Correa and [agent Scott] Boras, you don't want this kind of language because it lowers the value of the contract, it creates this uncertainty."
