Jay Gruden fired as head coach of Washington Redskins

WASHINGTON — Jay Gruden has been fired as head coach of the Washington Redskins after an 0-5 start to his sixth season.

The team announced the move Monday and said offensive line coach Bill Callahan would replace Gruden on an interim basis.

Owner Daniel Snyder and team president Bruce Allen informed Gruden he was out early Monday morning, a day after a 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots.

Gruden, the younger brother of Oakland Raiders and former Bucs head coach Jon Gruden, played quarterback at Chamberlain High School and with the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League, winning four ArenaBowl titles. He also played and coached for the Arena League’s Orlando Predators, winning two more ArenaBowls.
