Dodgers rookie Stripling pulled with no-no in 8th, next batter homers

SAN FRANCISCO -- Ross Stripling, who had never pitched above Double-A before cracking the Dodgers rotation out of Spring Training, pitched 7 1/3 no-hit innings against the Giants on Friday night in his Major League debut, departing after issuing a walk in the eighth with Los Angeles leading by two runs.

Chris Hatcher came on in relief and fell behind Giants catcher Trevor Brown, 3-1. On the next pitch, Brown hit his first career home run, tying the game at 2. San Francisco went on to win, 3-2, in 10 innings on Brandon Crawford's walk-off home run.

Stripling, who issued four walks in his 100-pitch effort, was bidding to join Bumpus Jones as the only players in Major League history to toss a no-hitter in their MLB debuts. Jones did it for Cincinnati on Oct. 15, 1892.

It was an amazing two-hit win by the Giants and underscores what a great and crazy game baseball is. One for the books.

Slavish adherence to pitch counts? It's early in the season yet, if I had been Dave Roberts I would have let the kid keep pitching. It is a man with no sentimentality at all who can take out a pitcher with a no-hitter going. If one believes in Karma, he got what he deserved.

I see that Stripling is being a good little company boy and saying it was the right decision.

Can you say, " just desserts" when Roberts was ejected? Most interesting game.
