Eli Manning wants more money than Aaron Rodgers? (Don’t we all ...)

Not The Onion!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/eli-manning-wants-more-money-than-aaron-rodgers---don-t-we-all-----140832026.html

And so it is true with Philip Rivers’ deal now done, we turn our attention and gaze at Eli Manning. With fellow Class of 2004 quarterbacks Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger signed up for the next several seasons, Manning looms as the biggest quarterback whose future is not yet clear....

Hey, if Russell Wilson can ask for the moon and get every bit of a waxing-gibbous contract (astronomy term), and Rivers can more guaranteed money than anyone in history, then perhaps anything is possible in this ask-and-you-very-likely-could-receive quarterback market.

Rodgers leads the way on average-per-year salary at $22 million, followed by Wilson ($21.9M), Roethlisberger ($21.85M), and Rivers ($20.8M). As far as guaranteed money is concerned, Rivers ($65M) and Wilson ($61.5M) lead the way; Rodgers checks in lower at $54M. Don't get fooled by the total money — where Jay Cutler's $126M and Joe Flacco's $120M pace the way — as the average per year and total guarantees are the numbers that matter most.

Manning’s name, his two Super Bowl rings and thriving (at times) in the New York boiler market are all things Eli can hang his hat on as reasons to believe he’s worthy of the biggest contract in the NFL. Reasons against that argument: Rodgers is better. So there you have it.

1. Speaking of QBs, you know whose contract looks like the biggest blunder right now?

Colin Kaepernick.

When Kaep signed his contract last year he took a lot less guaranteed money and years to "help keep the team together."

But then several key players retired on defense. Two more were kicked off the team for being douchebags. Several others, defense and offense, left for free agency. Oh, and nearly the entire coaching staff was replaced.

Additionally, Kaep loses money for not being named an All-Pro or not making it to the Super Bowl. That sounds like a real possibility now. You're only as good as the guys around you -- teammates and coaches.

I just realized this.

Can't blame Manning for going for it.

6. Kaepernick got blindsided when Jim Harbaugh parted

Kaepernick really, really believed Harbaugh was going to pave the way make it all happen for him.

7. Was he really blindsided? Local media reported Harbaugh was doomed months before ...

Harbaugh's departure added the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back.

Losing guard Iupati and tackle Davis, and center Kilgore (to injury) plus Gore had to be the real blindsides. No doubt Harbaugh had his back, but it was hardly secret he was on the chopping block.

8. I remember it being months of rumors and speculation

The sports writers knew what was happening, but the front office shit intentional didn't filter down to the troops. The team only learned of his departure when Harbaugh told them after the season ended.

I believe Kaepernick thought Harbaugh was going to stay.

2. Maybe he should call Joe Flacco and ask how giving an assload of money

to one player impacts his chances of winning... but surely a QB that lead his team to the playoffs ONE of the last FIVE years is worth that.

Yes, Manning does have 2 SB, in the 2007 and 2011 seasons, but excluding those two seasons, Manning has ZERO playoff wins and has missed the playoffs 5 times in 9 seasons as the starter. He's won 10 or more games 4 times in those 9 seasons, but the last time was 2010 He's proven that when he's hot, he's a top flight talent, but also that he's not "hot" that often.

5. They're all making way more than the guy that won the SB last year, and NONE of them

have a better resume.

That Cutler contract is unreal, though. If Cutler could guarantee to match his best career year for EVERY year of that contract, it's still twice what he's worth.
