Related: About this forumIs the NHL on the Verge of a Mumps Outbreak?
YourHHRSnews.com:Minnesota Wild...defenseman Ryan Suter has the mumps, making him the latest player in the NHL to be diagnosed over the past month. For the Wild, its the third time theyve had an encounter with the mumps after Keith Ballard had them earlier this season, and then defensemen Jonas Brodin and Marco Scandella later experienced similar symptoms...
New York Rangers forward Tanner Glass was diagnosed with the mumps, which came after Anaheims Corey Perry and Francois Beauchemin were both sidelined earlier this season...
Mumps typically starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite, and is followed by swelling of salivary glands...Mumps is spread by droplets of saliva or mucus from the mouth, nose, or throat of an infected person...Items used by an infected person, such as soft drink cans or eating utensils, can also be contaminated with the virus, which may spread to others if those items are shared...
The MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is the best way to prevent mumps...
Are the players giving it to each other, or does the NHL need to be more diligent about keeping their locker rooms sanitary?

Why is this outbreak happening in the NHL?
How can the NHL stop the spread?
...(T)he virus can be passed to another individual before any symptoms occur. Players sharing water bottles, for example, wouldn't know they are spreading the virus. "That's probably how it's moving around between teams and within the teams," said Dr. Peter Lin, CBCs medical columnist.
Sports teams are in close proximity in the locker room, and it becomes an easy setting for disease transmission. "The NHL is like any enclosed population like dorms or schools. These are people that are in close contact with one another for long periods of time, and they are the ones most at risk for getting any infections," (says)...Dr. Todd Hatchette, chief of service for microbiology at Capital District Health Authority in Halifax.
How can the NHL stop the spread?
...The MMR vaccine (for measles, mumps and rubella viruses) immunizes against mumps. The first shot is 70-80 per cent effective and the second shot boosts the effectiveness of the vaccine to 90 per cent.
Enforcing the use of hand sanitizers and making sure each player has his own water bottle are also ways for the NHL to try to control the outbreak...Health-care professionals recommend cleaning frequently touched surfaces regularly, not sharing drinks or eating utensils, and not touching your hands to your mouth.

(42,998 posts)4. Mumps is highly contagious
NHL seems good with getting vaccinated as its only 13 players infected last I heard. If they weren't vaccinated the numbers would be in the hundred plus. Mr. Crosby seems to have a weak immune system. Not only was he immunized but he had a booster a few months ago. More proof that it doesn't matter how healthy you are, anyone can get infectious diseases

Excellent point: Seeing has he's had multiple injuries -- including concussions -- he probably does have a weaker than average immune system.
