I Root for The Met's, Rangers, and Giants. I follow and sometimes root for the Jets.

(31,167 posts)I grew up in Cleveland but have resided in the Bay Area longer, so in baseball it's the Giants, A's and the Tribe. Same trio of cities in the NFL. Also a sucker for teams that have struggled for a long time or are located in depressed areas, so when my teams are out of it I pull for the likes of the Cubs, Lions, Pirates, etc.
Not particularly a basketball or hockey fan, nor have time to follow much NCAA. Appreciate the difficulties playing on the PGA circuit and watch once in a while. I wish nothing but the best for Muhammad Ali, who I consider to be one of the greatest boxers of all time and one of the most courageous athletes of my generation.

(64,931 posts)I grew up in NW Ohio, and am an Ohio State Fan. Otherwise no other Ohio teams...
Pittsburgh Pirates in baseball, because I always hated Pete Rose and the reds in the 70's.
The Dallas Cowboys in football, because my dad was a Steelers fan and it was a competition thing.
The Boston Celtics in basketball, because there were no real teams to root for in Ohio. The Cincinnati Royals left Ohio in the mid 70's and Cleveland?? Sorry, Auggie.

(71,265 posts)I also like the Kansas City Royals.

Back when I cared: Austin Carr, Bingo Smith, Nate Thurmond, Jim Chones ...
I photographed Nate years later in San Francisco for a local utility promotion. Great guy. He signed a ball for me too.

(17,086 posts)I usually root for the Niners against anyone but the Pats, but never the Raiders or A's. Sports gets complicated sometimes.
One of my best friends liked to say, "I wouldn't trade a used piece of string for an Ohio State grad!"

I would not trade a used piece of string for a grad of Ann Coulter University!

(20,365 posts)I'm kind of down on the Rockies and Texas Rangers right now. That's why I made my avatar to be my childhood favorite team, the Kansas City Athletics.
But seriously, I ought to start rooting for my future home town teams - The Chargers and Padres.

(5,997 posts)Despite living in the DC Metro area since the early '80s, I haven't been able to shake off my affection (affliction?) of rooting for my original home town teams. I like the Skins but hate most of their fans. Trying to become Natinals fan, but can't find the time.
I got my love for Barça from my wife's Tio Antonio. Barça's "more than a club" and still represents the anti-fascist sentiment in Spain (outside Madrid). He introduced me to the beautiful game while visiting and we'd watch games together. Of course, having the magnificent Messi made it easy.
I don't really follow other teams, but typically root for the underdogs.

(22,143 posts)Hockey in general and the NFL in general. I'll watch the Phillies if they're in the playoffs but don't care a whole lot about baseball. Don't care about basketball at all. I like boxing and MMA but don't follow anyone in particular. I like some Olympic stuff too.

(1,695 posts)Followed closely by the Yankees. Football is my first love tho. And yes I like playing fantasy football. But I'm a stats kinda guy. That's why I love the Eagles but can watch any team and root for certain players I admire.

(794 posts)because he seemed like a stand-up, good person. Ever since he decided to throw his reputation away by teaming up with the papa johns asshat and playing political games with the lives of his many pizza restaurant employees. Manning changed from a good guy to a real fucker during the last election- It's too bad; he started off with such promise.

(9,709 posts)I don't have a favorite NBA team since that fine citizen Howard Schultz sold the Sonics and Durant away to Oklahoma City. The NBA is my least favorite league anyway
NCAA, I mostly root for the PAC-12 when they're playing schools from other conferences. Within the conference, my favorites are Stanford and UW..

(59,305 posts)Seahawks, Mariners, and Vancouver Canucks. I went to school in Lawrence so I sorta root for KU(basketball). I don't follow any team in college football. I use to follow the Sonics til they moved to Oklahoma, so I have no team in the NBA anymore....
I sometimes root for the Bears, Cubs, Braves, any team that plays against the Cowboys, Steelers, Oklahoma Sooners, and the Yankmee's.

(813 posts)At a lesser level teams with a Wisconsin connection. Grew up in Chicago mostly, so that's where the basic loves formed. But, I've been living in Wisconsin for almost 35 years, so some feeling has formed there. Hell, I can root for the Packers when they aren't playing the Bears or a win wouldn't have a negative effect on the Bears.
That is, I can root for them, but feel a deeper, secret pleasure when they fail...

(10,893 posts)I grew up liking them mostly because they both represent my hometown. Even though the A's lost in the 1st round of the playoffs last season, it still feels great to have a competitive team again in the Town. They played good all season, and they even had their first division crown since '06. So, congrats to them. I just wish that they weren't so adamant about moving. Both the A's and the Warriors are trying to leave town; the A's want a stadium in San Jose, while the Warriors want to move back to SF.
As far as the Raiders go, they've been nothing but an embarrassment, as much as I hate to admit it. It has been over a decade since they last been to the playoffs, and they've been regressing the past couple of seasons after sweeping the AFC West in 2010. It was definitely a hard pill to swallow during that one game last year, where they lost in Denver 37-6. They were doing better when Tom Cable, Jason Campbell, and Michael Bush were there, but our imbecile owner got rid of them. Now, the only team they can beat is KC. It looks like it's going to be at least another few years before we have a decent football team again...
