New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees broke the NFL single-season record for passing yards last night with 2:51 remaining in the fourth quarter of a 45-16 blowout over the Atlanta Falcons. With a lead that large, some Falcons players told CBS Sports that they were upset that the Saints would elect to continue to pass against them with the sole purpose of achieving the record.
No need for that, one Falcons player told Pete Prisco of CBS. It came on our watch, but it didnt have to come that way. We wont forget it.
Thats just who they are, the Falcons player told Prisco. Well see them down the road. We wont forget any of it.
After the game Saints head coach Sean Payton admitted that he typically would not throw in that sort of situation, however he deemed it appropriate with the looming record.

(3,245 posts)imagine the flack he'd get if he started next week, played just enough to get the record and then sits the rest of the game.
Yeah they have a chance at getting the number 2 seed, but San Fran would have to lose to St. Louis next week. Even if San Fran sits most of their starters the chance of them beating the Rams is still better than even.

(31,169 posts)Only one healthy starting receiver and tight end, I believe. Staley, RG, and RB Gore have been nursing injuries too. Plus Willis on defense. I'm sure the Saints have their own maladies. The bye is huge. I wouldn't risk losing it.

(3,245 posts)I happen to think that's one of the reasons why Tomlin played Ben against the 49ers. They win that game and they're the second seed possibly looking at the #1.
So, do the guys who could use the week off now get it and try to win without or rest them, possibly lose the game and the bye week?
Auggie
(31,169 posts)to start and play the first half. In the 49ers case, as you point out, they are fortunate to be playing the Rams and could build enough of a lead that many of the starters could be rested for one or two quarters.

(17,086 posts)Brady is 190 yards behind him and playing at home in a grudge game for home field advantage in the playoffs. He won't be letting up next week.

(44,576 posts)with three minutes left? The Falcons should be grateful that the Saints didn't "elect to continue to pass against them with the sole purpose" of SCORING again! Cue the DU "Cry Me A River" String Quartet!
