Yale Black Law Students Speak Out On Ferguson

http://www.blackenterprise.com/education/yale-black-law-students-ferguson-decision/

“We are outraged to see that separate and equal codes of conduct, nightmares we hoped were relegated to our forefathers’ generations, persist today,” the students continued. “We are outraged because, somehow, it is permissible in a legal proceeding in 2014 to describe an unarmed young Black man as ‘a demon,’ reviving the same racialized stereotype that justified Southern Redemption, Jim Crow, and  other forms of racial domination. This description ripped Michael Brown not only of his humanity, even in death, but also of the justice due to him. He deserved better. So do we.”

The students continued their statement by pointing out the countless other black lives lost during the 100 days it took for the grand jury to decide whether or not to indict officer Wilson, citing, “We are indignant because the legal system was not only idle in responding to the heinous wrong done to Michael Brown, Jr. but also complicit in its cover-up.”

The leaders of YBLSA closed out their statement demanding an indictment of Darren Wilson at the federal level and saying that it is their duty as lawyers, citizens and Black Americans to help reform our nation’s justice system.

Bang on -

Separate But Equal Codes of Conduct - black teenage males don't get to act the same way as white teenage males and get the slaps on the wrists that they do.

And they nailed it - the idea that black young men are savages and so any pain inflicted on them is justified. We've seen what happens when legislation and governance starts from the belief that black men are savages. Second verse same as the first.

The very people that poo poo anger at Wilson being free to kill again - will poo poo these folks in their early 20's as elites who took their pony from them.

Yeah - there's that.

Jay was right - you CAN repeat the past. That seems to be happening in America eh?

If there is no equal protection and due process for blacks - be it victims or aggressors - then looks like we are right back to 1924.

It equates to lynchings, except that LEOs are mainly the ones doing it! Every single day, and at the very least once a week, there is another murder of an unarmed black person by a white cop, regardless of age, somewhere in this God-forsaken country. We must remember that not all whites are bigots. It's just that those who are bigots make the most noise. What is it going to take to put this horrible tragedy to rest, once and for all? This simply can NOT go on. I wish the DOJ would get off it's butt and do something once and for all. Because this is going to go on and on unless & until PO or AG Holder does something.

How many more will die while we wait for a useless report from another commission? It's past commission time. We're at the do something NOW stage.

That allows people to dismiss it - and I've seen this from a few folks in my 'social network' . . .

The counter point is - "No one says something when it's black on black or black on white".

It always seems to come from white folks . . .

My challenge - and hopefully you will join me in this is to always counterpoint -

You personally can start the protest and I will join.

If they are sooooooooooooooooooooo concerned about these other two scenarios - why have they done NOT ONE thing -lifted one tiny itty bitty little finger to prevent it?

Where's the outrage from those people?

It's all they've got. Excuses. When black men kill black men, or white men, they are prosecuted and thrown in prison. Tell them to get out of your face, that they HAVE no complaint. That's what you tell them.

I don't give money to Huff Po - clicks equal money.

This link goes to Black Enterprise magazine which is the 'gold standard' for black folks in the business community.

I have no problem with others getting the information out. But I do have a problem with people making money off other's work.

Btw, K&R. Tweeting too.

To indeed - send people to Black Enterprise magazine.

There are some folks at DU that probably don't even realize it exists - and that it comes to our homes the same as The Wall Street Journal.

Let this be a 'broad' recognition made of some things around here.

And thanks for tweeting that article!

But until the murder of Michael Brown, if I read it, I didn't really notice the name.

I will say though, I am pretty horrible at names of many things; books, movies, actors, bands, etc. I seem to remember what's bad more than what's good. Big fault.

Thank you for posting this

(which has greatly decreased in esteem in my opinion) with their full statement to publish. I don't know why the Yale students didn't also provide Black Enterprise magazine with their full statement, if it is, as you said, the 'gold standard' for blacks. Or perhaps they did, and the magazine choose not to publish it in full.

I can understand not wanting to give Huff Po clicks, but I also think their full statement has value, so I will provide the link to their article in my post above, for those who want to read it (Apparently the Black Law Student Association doesn't have it's own site or I would have linked to that for their full statement instead of Huff Po).

Me - I just wanted to support a black owned business.

And yep - I ama high earning black executive and in two associations I participate in - we are given discounts to a subscription.

It's also a good education though for some of the 'newer' DU'ers who just think we are all a bunch of demons and savages.

They probably had no idea it existed 0- or web sites like For Harriet. Like shhhhhhhhhh - we have entire conversations without white America's involvement.

ETA - B.E. was just letting us know what these little pups were up to. These are our future back fills in America.

I wouldn't feel posting from a source like B.E. in General Discussion or outside of this group. HOF or LGBT where there is a cross section of experiences? Yeppers. Outside of there - nope.
