"Now we're going to fear for our lives, because of the crazy people around here, Tabitha Bowe explained. I'm with my children all day long, I don't work you know, so yeah I'm scared now, I'm really scared, I could be the one being home when something like that happens."

(1,663 posts)If you live in fear then the criminals have already won and you will drive yourself crazy worrying over every imaginary sound.
On the other hand if you break into someone's home then you deserve whatever happens to you.

I know statistically that a home invasion is relatively rare where I live -- but, I keep a firearm in a secure place in case I need it.

(6,801 posts)Real experts know that a can of corn, while looking impressive on the mantel place, is too impractical for real self defense.
That's why no real military units use them. The SEALs, SAS, and Israel Mossad have all shifted away from the antiquated corn weapons system to the far more effective and practical canned bean delivery system.
Now whether such military grade legumes have a place in the hands of civilians is another debate entirely.
