http://ames.patch.com/articles/could-iowa-gun-bill-allow-weapons-in-schoolsDES MOINES Iowa's guns rights would be the most powerful in the nation, under a proposed state constitutional amendment that cleared the Iowa House this week.
Democrats say the measure would eventually allow people to bring guns into Iowa's schools, the Capitol and other public buildings.
County officials are concerned.
"I think one of the concerns for counties is in our courthouses, where there are emotional situations, what that could lead to, particularly domestic disputes," said Sioux County Supervisor Mark Sybesma. "In our treasurer's office, a lot of times people come in very disgruntled emotions and that type of thing. Guns sometimes aren't the best mix."

(906 posts)is the inclusion of language which would by state constitutional mandate impose a strict scrutiny standard upon all gun control bills.
Frankly, I believe that to infringe upon a basic civil liberty government should always be held to the standard of having to articulate and prove that such an law would:
1) be justified by a compelling governmental interest;
2) that the law not be overly-broad in definition or enforcement, that it narrowly tailored only to that address that compelling governmental interest; and
3) that the law/policy must be the least restrictive means for accomplishing that interest.
If these statutes are truly vital to be enacted, the state/counties/municipalities seeking them should have no problem meeting such a standard. Protecting the citizenry's essential civic liberties IS a progressive value....why are you so opposed to that?
