Gun Control & RKBA

Well now they have done it...
With the push to "pass" gun control in the dead of night with the SAFE act, in New York, Cuomo finally admits that "they have no way of enforcing" part of the law, by suspending another chunk of the SAFE act, add that to the magazine capacity ban that the court tossed a while back.. The "back ground check ammunition sales" is suspended. For some reason they are not publicizing it. It, was basicly found to be "unworkable"... Imagine that.. emotion based legislation passed in the dead of night, found "unworkable"...LOL...
New York with it's SAFE act, has a very serious, completely self-induced problem on their hands. I have seen estimates in the press as low as 5% compliance with it's forced "registration" scheme of the evil assault rifles, and with only a very small portion of New York law enforcement in support of the gun ban provisions in the law, and most outspokenly dead set against it, enforcing the law will be problematic to say the very least. More people registered guns in the tiny State of Connecticut, than in the much larger, state of New York.
Now down to the largest problem they are facing, one that they think they can ignore, like it's a bad dream.
With such low compliance of the law by people that very well know the penalties, several very unfortunate dynamics are in play let me point them out;
The majority of those that refused to register, are convinced that it is their right to own the rifles, and that it is no one's business if they own them or not... It is simply, "their right".. You can argue semantics about til you're blue in face over whether it really is "their right" all you want, but what YOU think is immaterial, it is what they THINK, they are the one with the rifles.
Now to the Crux of the problem.. We now have several hundred THOUSAND people, that are openly defiant to New York law. They now treat the law with contempt. They care not about penalties, they care not, what additional gun control law passes, their is no need to fear when even their local law enforcement, and most NY state troopers agrees with their position.
In short, Cuomo has rammed thru a law in the middle of the night, that for the most part, only GUN CONTROL supporters are obeying..And now thousands of people are thumbing their noses at them, and daring him to make the next move..
Their is no way around that fact, people feel they have NO obligation to obey unjust laws, and so they won't. And Cuomo will now have to enforce the law....or won't he, if so, HOW?
How do you deal with massive amounts of citizens just giving the middle finger and ignoring the statehouse? You can't get the sheriffs to do it, most of them are in the crowd with their middle finger up as well.
Widespread open contempt for a new state law, what are YOU going to do about it Cuomo???

(6,185 posts)I may be jaded, but I think he was more interested in proving his "bona fides" by passing the first, and what he thought was the toughest, gun control law after Sandy Hook.
I think he still had Presidential aspirations at that point.
I don't think he or his advisers gave the actual components of the bill or its enforcement more than a passing thought about whether they would work or be effective. Hence the 7 round magazine limit, ammo registration etc.
I think he told his people throw everything you can think of in there, so nobody looks tougher than New York does.
Now he's stuck with a white elephant he can't enforce and he can't back down in public without looking stupid and ineffective. Pretty much like all the gun control types in the end.

(5,046 posts)But those other states will be deserving of their own threads as well. BUT..
This is thread is about how weak the New York legislature is looking in an already "anti-gun" state. I mean if they are having mass non-compliance in New York, just how much compliance will they have in pro gun states? They are not saying anything.. They have been told BY the people to "put up or SHUT up" and they are shutting up.
Gun Control advocates are simply incapable of realize just how out of touch they are with most Americans. This manifests itself in several ways, for example, how bad they hate and misrepresent the NRA..
They continually scream about how the NRA is beholden to the evil gun manufactures, but you and I know that it is not true. The NRA is beholden to its nearly 7,000,000 dues paying members. If they simply acknowledge that the NRA has so many PAYING members it crushes their argument about how the public at-large is clamoring for gun control.
They cannot acknowledge that a majority of people are aligned against them. Because when they do, they are forced to admit they are the "outsiders", just NRA members (not counting any of other large gun rights groups) 7,000,000 of them, makes their "grass roots" look like "a' lawn clipping, blowing down the sidewalk in the breeze. You know Beevul, 95% of the NRA's supported candidates in the last NATIONWIDE election won?? That is a display of real grassroot POWER. It was a good year for gun control, they got 5%...

(12,194 posts)My point wasn't so much specifically about other states.
It was more to the point that entities making these laws are destroying their own credibility and legitimacy by making them, and that the 'targets' of these laws - the hated 'other' - are responding to these entities like one would expect any entity who has lost tons of credibility and legitimacy to be responded to by the targets who know that they themselves are seen, by these entities, as the 'hated other'.
With a big middle finger.
The credibility/legitimacy thing doesn't recognize state lines.
Governments generally have credibility, legitimacy, and the credible threat of force with which to work.
When you have substantial numbers of people giving government the middle finger, practically daring it to use force, it is proof positive that credibility and legitimacy have evaporated from the equation.

(2,375 posts)One of many very predictable outcomes that The Controllers never seem to see coming ---- and one of the most politically devastating. The obvious result of these worthless, feel-good measures is contempt for the rule of law generally. Will there ever be a time when the willfully and pridefully ignorant authoritarians in our party realize that they are pushing politics to the right with this bullsh*t?!
Rhetorical question, of course. I believe the answer is never. The hate, arrogance and bigotry of the culture warriors will never allow them to even consider the possibility that they are wrong on this issue.
