Related: About this forumMy 12-year-old doggo got sprayed by a skunk about eight months ago.
She's had several baths since then, of course. Today, I put her in the shower with me, soaped her up good, rinsed her well several times. She's still damp and is asleep at my feet right now. I still smell skunk.

(16,391 posts)You put the solution on the DRY dog. Makes sense. Water does seem to activate the odor. Live and learn.

(57,073 posts)From AKC website:
¼ cup of baking soda.
1-2 teaspoons of mild dishwashing detergent like Ivory Snow.
1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution.
Mix in a bucket and use immediately.
Work the foaming mixture well into the coat.
Leave on for five minutes.
Rinse with warm water.
Follow with dog shampoo if desired.
Several websites offer this solution.
I hope this is helpful, Laffy! So sorry your fur baby got sprayed.

One site said skunk smell is strong enought to stop a bear... yikes! Put in that perspective...

(6,457 posts)We had a medium size dog, took one large can of tomato juice. It works
Laffy Kat
(16,391 posts)I could never try that, unfortunately. The smell and taste of tomato juice will gag me. I don't' know why.

(102,472 posts)(peroxide with soap, tomato juice, etc). I'd go buy a bottle of the commercial product, though if you still smell residue.

(6 posts)PetSmart carries an excellent product for getting skunk out of anything. I have forgotten the name of it. I had to use it on myself one night when I got hosed, and it worked beautifully. You can even put it right on your skin.

(51,648 posts)I did the tomato juice, vinegar, etc and every time she got the slightest bit damp for 6 months the smell was reactivated.
After she was sprayed she ran into the house and rolled on the carpet. When I opened my purse the next day skunk smell came out and everyone smelled it.
I wad told that stuff with acidity or vinegar helps. The lady at my store suggested buying some douches (the acidity or something).

(30,780 posts)Our dog did the same thing. She rolled on the carpet and wiped her face on the furniture. I shampooed the carpets and the furniture, and the smell came back. It was like that for months.
My daughter was in eighth grade at the time. She went to school, and her tennis shoes smelled like skunk. All the kids accused the boy in front of her of smelling like skunk. He was one of those kids who never bathed enough. She sat there innocently, and let him take the blame. Twenty years later, she apologized to him at their class reunion. He just laughed it off.
We knew the boy's dad. He was a single father, struggling to raise two boys. He told us once that he got tired of corralling his boys and chasing them to the shower. He figured out that as soon as they got interested in girls, things would change. They did. He is a good man, and he raised two very good sons. It's funny how things work out, skunks or no skunks.

(16,391 posts)Yes, I've raised two boys and they had to be "highly encouraged" to shower in their prepubescent years, but did, indeed, improve their personal hygiene a year or two into puberty.
