Discovered that my cat LOVES the stems from baby spinach leaves.

Not the actual spinach leaves, just the stems.

I've tried growing oat grass from seed. Not interested.

I've tried giving her expensive pots of pet store cat grass. Nope.

She is an indoor cat and I know she needs roughage. What to do?

I was making a spinach salad a few days ago and she was on a nearby counter in the kitchen meowing like mad. I tried giving her a spinach leaf and she turned her nose up. On a whim, I gave her the stem, which I was going to throw in the trash anyway. She went nuts! "More human, more, more, more!"

I eat spinach salads probably 5 or 6 times a week. I hate the stems, cuz it feels like I'm eating twigs, so I used to pull them off and throw them away.

Now I save them and put them on a plate on the ground several times a week for Spinach Cat, her mom and her sister. They hold them between their front paws and gnaw on them like they're eating candy. THEY LOVE THEM!

1. Weird. But I once had a cat who loved corn husks.

He'd pounce on them whenever I husked corn and he'd gnaw on them with great enthusiasm. He also loved bread - I couldn't leave bread out on the counter because he'd tear through the plastic wrap and gnaw a hole in the bread.

Strange creatures.

Particularly arugula. He recognizes the crackly sound of the bag when we take it out of the frig, and appears instantly.

Just the opposite of your kitty, he chows down the leaves, but usually stops at the stems.

because I repurpose them. Throw them in the food processor and make a Green Goddess type of salad dressing, or a Spinach Dip. I also freeze veggie scraps like that and toss everything into the soup pot.

One of my cats does like to eat green beans, canned or fresh, he really like them.

6. Sammy, a Tonkinese I had in the 1970s and 1980s, had to have a saucer with 2 tablespoons

of tomato juice each morning. Gabby liked stir-tried vegetables and half a saltine square. Paris wants a bite of potato chips or a couple of pieces of popcorn.

he will try to get to my salad to steal some. (I don't use dressing.) That's how I discovered he wanted lettuce. I turned around to find him helping himself to my salad about a year ago.

10. I just found out that my people food-rejecting Sammy (cat) loooooooves tahini.

I made a batch of hummus last night & Sammy, usually completely blase about people food, got right in my face & tried to steal the hummus off of a piece of naan I was eating. I didn't want her to eat it because of the garlic in it, so I gave her a tablespoon of tahini to see if she'd like it. She went nuts. She ate 4 tablespoons of it which is a lot for my little petite, 5 pound girl.

Go figure.
