Related: About this forumOur ten year old Golden retriever
I well we all love him dearly as we love all our dogs the Newfie and the chocolate land shark as well. But the golden has been having a hard time getting into bed of late. Even with his arthritis medicine , so I built him steps and last night was the first time he used them. And he came up on the bed tail wagging a smile on his face so excited. And laid down between my wife and the man. This boy since he has been a pup slept with us. We used to carry him to bed as a puppy. And this morning he is so happy I slept next to my mommy all night and we snuggled. He truly is my wifes significant other he loves us all but he has it bad for my wife always has. I guess my point is the things we do for our dogs.

(11,579 posts)been the greatest pet. Very smart and gentle. I hate seeing him get so helpless. But I do whatever to have another day with him! I would have another main coon again. We have had him since a kitten.
I cant imagine my bed without him.

(776 posts)bed itself. Several years ago when she had cruciate ligament surgery. I'm glad I did because she is now 16 and needs it to get up and down off the bed.

(97 posts)He won't jump all over place but fish oil does wonders for dog with arthritis. It helps keeping them getting too stiff and sore. Check with the vet if he agrees. It helps my dog and me.
Fish oil along with arthritis medicine

(17,702 posts)..them spit out all over the house. Even puppy Sylvia (who eats anything not nailed down) wont touch them. I poked a hole in the cap to squeeze the oil out and had the cap turned toward me.. so you know what happened.

(17,702 posts)...he used to get on the bed up until a year ago. I have some dog steps I bought so he can get into the car.. big heavy metal things. I may have to drag them upstairs.

(8,451 posts)When our last guy started getting lilke that we, we took the mattress and box spring off of the frame so it would be lower. My husband made ramps for our vehicles so he wouldn't have to jump in and out. At one point, for about a year, I was taking him for laser treatments on his back (where is arthritis was) three times a week. Cost a lot of money, but he loved it. He's been gone for just shy of three years. My husband always thought he was "his" dog, but I think he loved me just a tad more, especially the last two years.

I know how hard it is when our fur babies get to be old. It breaks your heart to see them struggle but they still wag their tails at the sight of their humans. I wish all of you the best!

(3,554 posts)Most exiting time of the day. Front or back seat: she refused to sit and look out the window, always had to stand. Even when the muscles in her back legs started weakening, she would be sliding around in the back seat. It would drive me nuts, and of course she ignored my commands to sit.
Finally she lost the use of her back legs altogether, and I got her a doggy wheelchair. We still had great rides and walks, but then her front end started to weaken and she couldnt sit up. She got depressed and car rides lost their magic.
I should have probably put her down at that point, but she wasnt in pain and her mind was so sharp and active. One day a light bulb went on: I folded down the back seat and put an old child proof stair gate on some empty water jugs. That plus her beds stacked on top brought her right up to window level. Every day for the next 7 months we would go for a long car ride, and she loved it. I would lift her out of the car on her bed and wed lunch in the park or go for kayak rides in the St. Laurence river. With a doggie life jacket on, of course. I wish Id gotten that jacket years earlier, I actually got Daisy swimming and wed go for walks in the water on a hot day.
God, I miss that dog.
