Related: About this forumJessie is gone now
I posted a while ago about our Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Jessie. She had a huge tumor on her hind end and the cancer had spread to her lymph system. It was getting very difficult for her to lift herself into a standing position and she had a pronounced limp from the lump under her left shoulder. The decision was made by us to put her to sleep this morning, and the doctor was in full agreement. She had her head in my wife's lap as she crossed.
This girl was unlike any dog I've owned. She knew she'd been put here to keep us laughing at her antics and her extended vocalizing. We're agreed that we don't want to go through this pain again, she being the fourth dog we have had to put to sleep. Lots of tears here this morning.

(3,186 posts)Even with all of her infirmities, she was still a beautiful dog. But you did the right thing as hard as it was/is.
RIP Jessie. And my condolences to you and your wife.

(2,129 posts)It's never easy to let go of our furry loved ones, but you let her go and now she is not suffering or in pain anymore. Much peace to you in the coming days and weeks. I know how you feel about adopting another dog after the pain of losing 4 dogs, but I hope you don't close your heart from letting another dog into your life someday when you are ready. It might happen when you least expect it!

(16,926 posts)There are two ways of looking at this, I guess. We adopted her from the shelter when she was around 2 years old. She soon became a member of the family, welcoming us home with a rousing "woo woo WOOO!" (translation - we're all here! Ain't it great?" . Dropping a green tennis ball into the hole you just dug for a new plant in the raised bed to make sure you remember what's really important out in the backyard (play with ME!). She also used to lay on her side and roll her tennis ball around and around between her paws, never seen a dog do that before.
And it feels as if you're putting your own child to sleep when that terrible day comes. I know that seems a bit over the top to those who actually have children, but the bond feels that strong to me, anyway.
On the other hand, it's not too difficult to imagine the wonderful friends that someone may have enjoyed for a short lifespan that are euthanized daily across the land, and with no comforting lap to lay their head in their final moments.
There's that lump, again.

(20,878 posts)You can tell from the picture IMO.
It is sad as can be no doubt.
I've gone back and looked at pictures of my late Old Kitty and wow was she ever sick. Shame on me for keeping her like that. It was selfish in hindsight.
You did the right thing.
I lost my dog to the same sort of cancer, a big tumor under the front leg.
He was in a lot of pain and miserable and I had to have him put down after I'd had one surgery done to remove it (it came back needless to say).
Again, so sorry for you and may Jessie RIP.
