Related: About this forumCat people: advance notice / request for a stray male possibly needing a home
Hi all -
I'm feeding a semi-feral male at my office; he's trusting me more every day but I have yet to be able to pet him.
Anyway - I'd like to catch him sometime this summer, have him neutered and checked out for FIV. If he's negative, he can be the outdoor office cat after he's been neutered, vaccinated, etc. My office is in a quiet cul-de-sac and he has many different ports of call around here where he nests / rests.
However, if' he's FIV+ and tame / loving, I'd like to find someone who could offer him a home. Especially if you are familiar with the health needs of cats with FIV.
I have many cats of my own, including a territorial male, and wouldn't want to bring an FIV+ cat into an FIV- feline household.
So - this is just advance notice, if you know of anyone who accepts FIV+ cats or if you would be willing to take him yourself.
Again, I don't know his FIV status. I just don't want to have to scramble when I do know his status if he is a carrier; I'm trying to be "proactive" and do some planning if necessary.
Thanks. I'm going to kick this for a bit and put it into the Pets forum too.
By the way, we're located in Virginia. I'd transport him to a loving home into any of the surrounding states or find other transport if need be.
Also, I'll put photos up of him later on this month ...

(11,012 posts)a near death illness for the (according to the vet) 15 year old semi feral cat to trust us. In the spring he starts wandering the neighborhood again and is gone three nights out of five...
He is very affectionate inside the house, but has to have his trust won all over again every time he is outside.

(13,661 posts)I have a friend who does also, but she has 30+ cats (most not FIV+, but several who live in a separate section of her large home that are) and she may be able to, or she may not. Depends on timing, etc. She said a while back she was getting maxed out.
I hope he's healthy and can just hang here ... he knows this area well. But I know of one other male in this area who was FIV+ (and I made the awful decision to have him euthanized because he was quite aggressive). So Mr. Moustache's odds are 50/50...
I'm going to just let him be for a while before I try anything; he doesn't trust me much yet anyway. I just want to be prepared.

(15,220 posts)This is some updated (and promising) news about FIV cats.
From the article:
Purdue Universitys College of Veterinary Medicine conducted a long-term study in cat shelters and drew two conclusions: FIV-positive cats can live with FIV-negative cats and not infect the FIV-negative cats during normal day-to-day interaction; and mother cats infected with FIV dont pass the virus on to their kittens."
