Still having trouble from all the pain meds messing with my stomach, so I am keeping it simple.
What's for dinner where you are?

(146,218 posts)I just started back at it a few months ago and I am having a blast. I have recently made pants with material I got in Africa, a shirt/pants/kimono top combo, a bathrobe and a very flowing shirt. This I can say - I look *unique*, lol.
But today I started a project with a friend to make high quality, reusable grocery bags. We got everything cut out for our first bag and so far, so good.
Do you sew?

(12,253 posts)but I never made any garment that didn't make me look like a cafeteria lady or a medieval serf. My ex-mil bought me a great machine in the 70's and I didn't do well with that round, either. I finally gave it away to a fashion student when we moved to NC and didn't ask for it back when we returned.
I like the idea of it and I am not bad at it technically. My home-ec teacher hung my garment inside out on open house night because it was well finished, but when I put it on...ridiculous! Even she couldn't keep from laughing.

(146,218 posts)and age has given me much more freedom to do that.
I was mortified as a child to wear what my mother made because it was different.
Now I just don't give a damn.

You guys are killin' me!

(12,253 posts)My grandma made most of my clothes when I was in elementary school and I loved them. Gram also scrounged around her more affluent friends and found some very nice hand-me-downs. Other than that, my mom would buy "3 dresses for $10" from the cheap rack at Sears for back to school and a pair of saddle Oxfords for all occasions. I've been in heaven living in the NYC suburbs because of the discounted designer goods/sample sales that can often be bought for pennies on the dollar.

(16,334 posts)trying the greens with no salt seasonings instead of smoked hock.
I'm skeptical!

(12,253 posts)Worth a try...
Phentex
(16,334 posts)not the same as New Year's Day when the smell makes your mouth water but they were still good.
I miss salt.
lol

(12,253 posts)I take it you have to give up salt for a really good reason. Friends who have made the change said you get used to it. Thanks for sharing the experience!

(154,021 posts)Luddi makes pretty good crust, and I make a killer sauce and sliced mushrooms on top. So all that is left is preheating the oven.

(35,669 posts)Spouse made guacamole, which we had with tortilla chips.
Neighbor stopped over with several dips.
Got out a bottle of Thai chili sauce and opened up a bag of lavash chips.
We had an elaborate lunch at a restaurant, which is why we were happy to do "chip" night.

(12,253 posts)Especially with guacamole and a Thai chili sauce. One of my favorite chips are Stacy's pita chips with sea salt and a nice fresh, hummus.

(9,791 posts)I like this menu because it's tasty and so easy to prepare. It also makes good leftovers.

(50,130 posts)Needed to use up some leftover roast chicken, and had everything else on hand. Will have some crudites on side, and watermelon.
I feel one of those summer colds trying to take hold, so soup with ginger and curry will be good.
Re: sewing. I have a new project: a naturalist's field bag for a 6 year old boy in the family. When he was on vacation camping with his fam in the semi-desert, he had a blast picking up specimens and bones and rocks etc. He loves to play at man v. wild. So I thought of making him a field bag out of denim, with many pockets, and with some tools -- a magnifying glass, a small pick-hammer for rocks, a sieve, some tins, etc. I think it's going to be fun.
