Making a Murderer - Netflix's new true "crime" documentary series is mind blowing!
Fans of HBO's The Jinx or the podcast Serial will love it.
The subject of Making is a Wisconsin man who was convicted of rape and other crimes in 1985, served 18 years in prison but was exonerated by new DNA evidence. He could have been paroled many times, but refused to confess to a crime he did not commit. Two years after his release, he was charged with murder in a new case.
It starts a little slow, with an in depth look at the Wisconsin farm community, the Avery family and their cousins. Poor Steve has a low IQ and a family from the wrong side of the tracks, when his exoneration exposes massive local corruption in the justice system. A huge payout is expected from his town and officers themselves (insurance refuses to pay) but things go quickly and horrible wrong. Compelling and infuriating, don't want to spoil a bit for any of you! I have 6 1/2 more episodes, so careful with the spoilers.

(20,886 posts)I'm about midway in this. What an incredible miscarriage of justice.
What they did to that poor kid is abominable.

And no one ever investigated the boyfriend and the mysterious missing phone messages.

(47,209 posts)but I wonder what happened to the woman. Did they approach her to set him up and she said she would rat them out? Or was it the caller? Why would the brother erase messages and not have to answer to that?

(20,886 posts)Here's my theory. She had broken up with the boyfriend. She kept getting calls that she didn't answer. I think the boyfriend stalked her and killed her. The old "if I can't have her, nobody can have her" routine. I think she was killed somewhere, moved in the car and burned in the quarry.
From there it gets complicated, and I don't have a clear timeline. But, I think the BF saw an opportunity when the news reported Steven (with all his history) as a suspect. I have an idea those bones were moved to the pit at that time. The BF thinking that would be enough to implicate Steve.
Complicit in all this is the sheriff's department. I think they found the car and moved it to the salvage yard. The key was in the car and later planted in Steve's room. I think they also planted the blood. They may or may not have had anything to do with the bones in the pit.
The brother was also complicit by erasing or allowing the BF to erase phone messages, that apparently the BF had previously investigated online.
There are some gaps in this theory, but I do believe the sherrif's department, the boyfriend and the brother were all involved in her death and coverup.

(47,209 posts)or discuss the evidence. I don't know how anyone can turn that many not guilty votes around. I really think the other juries were threatened or at least intimidated by him or others.

(47,209 posts)although I saw on Reddit there is a theory about a "German" man who's own wife reported suspicious things about this time.
She said they are denying she ever gave a report. Scary stuff.

When his nephew comes into the picture it gets really chilling. You see the over reach in full effect.
