Maine election officials have given the green light for a November referendum to win back marriage equality in the state, more than two years after voters approved a ballot measure repealing a 2009 same-sex marriage law.
Maines Secretary of State's office confirmed Thursday that it had verified more than 85,000 signatures turned in by LGBT advocates seeking to restore marriage rights for same-sex couples. Only about 55,000 valid signatures were required in a state where recent polls show 54% of residents support equal marriage rights.

(3,275 posts)It was so disappointing two years ago when gay marriage was voted down. If I remember correctly it was a slim majority. It is another thing to watch on election day.

(2,237 posts)It's looking like we may have gay marriage votes in a few states in 2012 now, Maine, Maryland, and probably California to (the prop-8 trial is looking to take till at least 2013 to be settled, hence why there's talk of putting it on the ballot again).
We may not win every single state ballot that marriage equality is on, but I've got a good feeling we're going to win at least one of them somewhere.
