Some of the most curious costumes worn along the parade route belonged to protesters.
Behind a barricade, a group of men wore the fringed Jewish prayer garment known as the tzitzit and held up anti-gay signs bearing the logo of a group calling itself the Jewish Political Action Committee.
Judaism prohibits homosexuality, one sign read.
But the men were not Jewish. They were Mexican laborers, protesting because they were paid to protest, said one of the men, who would not give his name.

Jewish groups celebrate Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage
WASHINGTON (JTA) How often do you get the opportunity to pack 109 years, #LoveWins and the colors of the rainbow into 140 characters?
Thats how the American Jewish Committee celebrated the Supreme Court ruling Friday extending marriage rights to gays throughout the United States.
For 109 years AJC has stood for liberty and human rights, its tweet said. Today is a happy day for that proud tradition #LoveWins. It was punctuated with a heart emoticon splashed rainbow colors.
The contrast between an organization founded at the launch of the last century celebrating the rights embraced by Americans only at the launch of this one was emblematic of the glee with which much of the Jewish establishment reacted to the ruling.
The Anti-Defamation League, in its own tweet, left out its age (102) but also got in the hashtag, #LoveWins, and that funny little heart.
Thirteen Jewish groups, among them organizations representing the Reform, Reconstructionist and Conservative streams, were among the 25 joining the amicus brief the ADL filed in Obergefell v. Hodges.

Similar groups pop up in Miami as well, but NY seems to be where they are based.

I recall an earlier Pride when they did a particularly enthusiastic dance in front of Chabad's Midtown HQ.

(53,956 posts)Only in the largest of cities will you see other religious groups wackos. Like I said, I am aware of something similar in Miami, I think DC as well, and it wouldn't surprise me to hear about Los Angles or San Fran, though the Jewish population in San Fran isn't very large, as I recall. This group is what I would call Fundamentalist fundies!

(14,691 posts)I was with People for Bernie and we were waaay back in the line of march - with only 3 groups behind us. We only really got marching on 5th ave. around 6:15. The march started at noon. So maybe the pious got tired.

(53,956 posts)The only fundies I have ever seen wait out the entire parade are Fred Phelps and his gang at the 2nd National March on Washington (most of the others left rather early), the neo-Nazis and the Elohim City nut jobs in two Tulsa pride parades, and a fundie AA church in Atlanta. The other cities where I marched, they either left, were too small for me to notice, and in at least two cases, I was probably too drunk/hung over to notice. I have marched in South Carolina (Myrtle Beach, Greenville, Columbia, Charleston), North Carolina (Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Greensboro), DC, New Orleans (which is really small), Oklahoma (OKC and Tulsa) and St. Louis. On edit...duh...I forgot Atlanta! I marched there at least 4 times...maybe more, who can remember! LOL!

(53,956 posts)Ever been to Tulsa when it is 90+ degrees?! It isn't fun! And I am from the Deep South! The biggest shock to me was seeing neo-Nazis marching, complete with arm-bands. That was very disturbing for someone who is both gay and Jewish.
