(3,795 posts)It's right-wing hate-thinking based on sociological ignorance.
I hate seeing that on DU.

(860 posts)be a normal reaction when people are trying to take away your rights and hurt you? I mean, I can understand someone who is scared and resent straight people for doing that. But 'heterophobia' isn't institutionalized like homophobia is.
I can't understand homophobia. LGBT folks haven't done anything against straight people to deserve that. I wish people wouldn't put the two in the same category, because they're not the same.

(54,671 posts)While there are certainly GLBT people who are "afraid of" or resentful of straight people, it rarely is exhibited and certainly doesn't "enjoy" the political and societal power that homophobia does.. The way it is being used in that thread is anyone who dares to stand up to or question homophobia is "silencing" heterosexuals.

(860 posts)I am just saying that they're trying to twist a normal reaction (not trusting the majority because they're oppressing you.) into something that revolves around them instead. I realize that I wasn't clear at all. Sorry.
But I really don't think that you can be oppressed for something that gives you privilege in this society - like being straight. Trying to use social justice terms in order to silence minorities is really aggravating behaviour.

(54,671 posts)I also agree with what you are saying (as well as what you said to Fearless). This idea that some are claiming to be "victims" because people refuse to tolerate intolerance is just beyond ignorance, IMO. I believe there are gays who can be discriminatory, even bigoted against heterosexuals, but it is rare and the idea that we have any way to enforce it at a societal or institutional level is absurd. Some of it comes from misuse and/or understanding of certain terms; discrimination, bigotry, prejudice. I think you saw the comment from one poster a few weeks back, it was a video explaining the terms (or something to that effect) and it was spot on!
I will admit I actually giggled when I saw the actual term "heterophobia" used. Sometimes, stupidity is simply funny.
Fearless
(18,448 posts)That LGBT people are discriminating against straight people.
The problem is that some of straight people (albeit fewer than in years past) feel that it is their right to outwardly be hostile to a group just because they don't like them. And, when they are now told that it is no longer socially acceptable to be outwardly hostile to LGBTers, they cry foul and cling to "heterophobia".
It's one thing if someone really really doesn't like LGBT people (albeit misguided and stereotypical). It's when they act on those beliefs and try to bring harm to LGBT people because of those beliefs, that there is a problem. They believe they have a right to harm their fellow people; the fact is they don't. And, they just can't handle that.

(860 posts)I think of the basis of most -isms as power and prejudice. LGBT people have no societal power over straight people, and they're certainly not wielding that power to discriminate them.
I think you hit the nail on the head, there. It's the new version of "why aren't you tolerating my intolerance".

(39,961 posts)for being straight. Gangs of gay people obviously rove the street looking to prey on innocent straight people and beat the dog out of them.

(39,961 posts)I resent a straight person claiming that they have been bashed because they are straight. I don't know ANYONE in the gay community that doesn't have a friend that has been beaten up because they were gay. None.
Yet here is a person claiming that straight people get beaten up because they are straight. It's lunacy.
