Related: About this forumArghh, I lost it with my asshole rw BIL.
I tried to not get into a fight with my brother in law but he insists on bringing his rightwing politics to the table and we eventually landed on gay marriage and, with a transgendered child I now have zero tolerance for bigotry. I point blank told him that he was a bigot. Probably not the most diplomatic thing to have done, but fuck it. I am so outraged by the yahoo idiotic rightwing crap that has infested half of this country, and their smug belief that they and their fuckd opinions are acceptable. I won't shut up anymore.
It didn't go well.

(24,634 posts)I understand he's family-in-law but you have to tell it like it is. I am always policing my mother and having her work out her issues. My best friend, the man and his partner that accompanied her to her citizenship ceremony, is gay. All she does is whinge about homosexuality, but she does admit that it's due to her religious upbringing. But when I mention Gio you can really see her make a change. And I had blown up on her one day and said. When you say what you say, remember who cared enough about you to be there for you on a special day (I had asked him to do that for me because I was out of the country). She sobered up and she has calm down a lot.
This was meant to happen and maybe he might work out his issues and grow up.

(7,887 posts)I've been told he was a real crusader against gay marriage in Argentina, but these days I think he sees the results world wide of the Church wading into this fight and has started calling off the war tactics.
If he can stand firm, then maybe the level of crazy will settle down a bit. I really think a lot of the hate rhetoric that came out of the Catholic Church and the right wing churches kept people bent out of shape, whipped them into a frenzy at times. Pope Benedict scared me.
Then all we have to do is find some way to get FAUX News off the air and possibly people can have honest conversations again without having to listen to people basing their opinions on other people's uneducated guesses and misleading propaganda.
Remember, hate the sin, love the sinner. Your BIL is probably a halfway decent person, just showing his hatefulness at a time when you weren't able to turn the other cheek.

(14,498 posts)You've got a transgendered kid and he's doing the ole "ewwww...... gay marriage... it's not natural" thing at the table?
Not just narrow-minded, mean and bigoted but *dumb*. Reeeaaally, reaaalllly *dumb*.

(23,156 posts)you associate with. Even if those people are relatives. Don't be afraid to cut this jerk off totally.
I must say, I get angry at those who suddenly see the light about the whole GLBT thing when they suddenly learn a child is one of those. Really? It took THAT to get you to understand that all humans deserve to be treated with dignity and respect???
Sigh. I suppose those late conversions are better than nothing, but still. . . .
Maybe someone could go out there and assign a GLBT person to each and every bigot's family.

(18,672 posts)Ignorance and bigotry should not be allowed to stand. We've seen what's happened in the last 30 years when their lie-infested memes are allowed to go unanswered by the media. I'm tired of right wingers thinking it is okay to denigrate the poor, minorities, the LGBT community, women, and people who are not American. Enough is enough! It's toxic, and their hatred and lies are spreading like a disease. I know I am done listening to their bullshit, and if they speak their stupidity out loud it while I'm within earshot, I'm countering it with truth every. single. time. It really pisses them off and they think they can make a lie into truth by loudly projecting it. Wrong!

(15,259 posts)He refused my offer to transfer his threats, we have not seen him again going on 6 years. He managed to use politics as a deragutory on in an issue that that did not involve politics.

(4,261 posts)Your BIL or your child and you chose your child. This is a great and amazing thing to do. It effs you up inside when you are treated as a second class citizen to make some other relative feel happy, from my experience.
Be proud, be strong and know that you have done yourself and your child a great thing.

(89 posts)As a Dad with a 5 year old boy who often wears dresses, I am really proud of you for standing up for your child and yourself. Actually you showed restraint since I have already had to hold myself back when dealing with some people who feel they can raise my (and everyone's) children better.

(575 posts)Never feel bad for speaking the truth! I have had to separate
myself from several family members over the years.. not for the same reason as you,
but my life is much happier because I did walk away.. It is just
best to avoid the painful, upsetting feelings they bring...
If its possible, stay far away from him, and please keep your
child away from anyone, family or other that would hurt you, or
your child..

(19,926 posts)I think you did the right thing. Maybe, just maybe he'll think about it later. And maybe not. But people need to be called on this shit. And he's just going to have to get used to gay marriage, so there.
I wouldn't feel bad about calling him a bigot though. I would feel proud for standing up for your child and what is right.

(27,670 posts)I'm never diplomatic anymore. Someone starts spouting hate, I see it as an opportunity to let them know what they are. I feel that coddling haters, and not directly standing up to their hate, just allows them to go on thinking that what they do is acceptable.
So bravo for confronting the dark side.
Congratulations on being blessed with a transgender child!!!
And what a lucky child, to have such a cool dad; s/he will have more opportunity to blossom into a very special adult if s/he gets that kind of support at home.

I thoroughly recommend getting the entire set of their CD's. No, I'm not associated with them in any way except as a big fan. You have to listen to everything at least three times to get all the double entendres (there's often multiple interpretations of phrases all of which are different from the first take on it), their use of language is exquisite.
Sadly they're no longer together but the music, and the pleasure from it, endures.
