In his first gubernatorial debate against Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinellii II (R) admitted Saturday that his extreme anti-LGBT views have not changed. While reaffirming his extreme earlier comments about what he termed the personal challenge of homosexuality, he suggested that he would create an economically positive environment that would help LGBT Virginians
McAuliffe repeatedly attacked Cuccinelli throughout the Virginia Bar Association debate in Hot Springs, VA for his record of demonizing science, womens health, and LGBT people. Twice, McAuliffe noted that Cuccinelli had called LGBT Virginians soulless and self-destructive and that his attempts to rescind non-discrimination protections have hurt Virginias business climate.
Cuccinelli consistently ignored the attacks until moderator Judy Woodruff asked him directly about his previous comments. Cuccinelli responded briefly, saying, My personal beliefs about the personal challenges of homosexuality havent changed. He then said that as governor he he would create an environment economically every Virginian has opportunity.
In contrast, McAuliffe reaffirmed his support for marriage equality, promised to sign an executive order banning discrimination in employment, and said while Virginias constitutional ban and Republican legislature make it unlikely, he would sign a marriage equality law if it came to his desk.

(70,501 posts)The repugs can gerrymander districts but not whole states so just like the national
election in 2012 the VA statewide governor's race will come down to math that the
republicans just can't win. women voters will not go repug, GLBT voters will not vote
repug, the young will not vote repug, Hispanics will not vote repug, teachers will not
vote repug, environmentalists will not vote repug, the educated (except for the rich) will note
vote repug, African Americans will not vote repug, the poor will not vote repug, and most
unions will not vote repug .... so that will leave old white men as the base of the VA repug
party and that # is shrinking daily.
BTW as a straight man what the hell is the personal challenge of homosexuality?

(4,558 posts)So far, the more he's opened his mouth the more the polls are giving McAuliffe the advantage.
heck, in the most recent rounds, the only poll that gave Cucinelli the win was Roanoke College (very conservative district, school, and actually had "polled" that Mittens was going to sweep Virginia in 2012.)
Quinnipiac's most recent has McAuliffe winning by 43% to 39%
Publicpolicy's most recent has McAuliffe winning by 41% to 37%
Roanoke College has Cuccinelli winning by 37% to 31%.
Being a non-presidential election year, I'm hoping that Cuccinelli does more to energize his opposition. In these years, voter bumps tend to be more for people going out to vote against someone, or against some ballot measure than for the purpose of voting for someone, or some ballot measure.
Indifference to Cuccinelli's ravings is our only enemy here imo.
