(JTA) President Obama tamped down expectations about brokering a nuclear deal with Iran before the upcoming deadline.
Theres still a big gap, Obama told Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer on Sunday on the 60th anniversary broadcast of the CBS program. We may not be able to get there.
Nov. 24 is the deadline for a nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers. American negotiators in recent weeks have sounded more optimistic about achieving an agreement.
Obama said there have been significant negotiations.
Israel rejects any deal that allows Iran to continue enriching uranium at even minimal levels, which it is believed that a nuclear deal with Iran will include. Israel believes any enrichment capacity leaves Iran as a nuclear threshold state.
Meanwhile, Irans supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, posted Sunday on his official Twitter account a plan to eliminate Israel, or what he called the fake Zionist regime.
The elimination of Israel does not mean the massacre of the Jewish people in the region, he said.
The plan, which Khamenei believes will be palatable to the international community, calls for a referendum by all the original people of Palestine including Muslims, Christians and Jews wherever they are.

(14,851 posts)Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took to Twitter to call for the destruction of Israel over the weekend. He first started with a string of vitriolic anti-Israel tweets that called for the destruction of the barbaric, wolflike & infanticidal regime of Israel.

They don't want a nuke, especially that guy.
Where is Israel on their nukes? Sealed lips, as always and always playing the victim

(14,851 posts)He threatened the existence of the Jewish State and wants to rid The area of almost all Jews.
And now wants a nuke .
What Bibi said is irrelevant.
This guy says what he wants and now wants a nuke - no matter what th Likud charter says - he wants rid the area of Jews ... Even those supporting Meretz.

Did you not actually read the article linked in the OP?
In case you didn't:
Iran definitely does not want the massacre of the Jewish people but rather Iran has proposed a practical & logical mechanism to eliminate Israel through a referendum involving all the original people of Palestine, including Muslims, Chrsitians and Jews anywhere in the world.

(25,699 posts)1) Israel has nukes.
2) Israel does not need Baruch Goldstein at the helm to be a threat to its neighbors; Netanyahu is more than enough.
3) If netanyahu loses his seat, it's likely to go to someone even crazier.
So. Do you believe israel's neighbors have the right - nay the responsibility - to take whatever action they deem necessary to eliminate israel's nuclear capability before it falls into the hands of someone even more psycho than Netanyahu?

(30,099 posts)For participants at the Israeli American Councils inaugural conference, this meeting of Jewish finance titans produced several historical insights about the roots of the Palestinian people (Adelson: they have none); a bit of advice on how to deal with Iran (Saban: bomb the sons of bitches); and some media criticism (Adelson: I dont like journalism especially not the Forward.)
Adelson and Saban, one a mega donor to the Republican Party, the other a top backer of the Clintons, may have their differences when it comes to U.S. politics. But on Israel, both engaged in one-upmanship, trying to outdo each others hawkishness.
When discussing a possible nuclear deal with Iran, which is now being negotiated between Iran and several international powers, both expressed skepticism. Adelson said that if the deal does not satisfy Israel, then putting himself in the shoes of Israels prime minister, he would not just talk. I would take action.
But Saban went further. A stick and a carrot, yes but I think that we showed too many carrots and a very small stick, he said of the Obama administration negotiators.

Iranian and American officials have held secret talks to discuss renewing diplomatic relations if a deal is reached on Iran's nuclear program and sanctions are lifted, the Times reported early on Monday.
According to the report, the two nations are discussing the possibility of opening a U.S. trade office in Teheran. This would be the first American diplomatic mission in the Islamic republic since the U.S. embassy in Teheran was overrun in 1979 during the Islamic Revolution, leading to the hostage crisis that haunted Jimmy Carter's presidency.
The Times quotes anonymous Iranian government officials as saying that these talks are due to continue this week in Baku, Azerbaijan, where the Iranian delegation will be headed by Mohammad Reza Sabzalipour, head of Irans global trade bureau.
The United States has denied that talks on renewing diplomatic relation between the two nations were taking place. the report says.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama said there is still "a big gap" in nuclear negotiations with Iran. In an interview with CBS aired Sunday, Obama said a permanent agreement may not be achieved before November 24, the current deadline for the nuclear talks.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Obama sent a secret letter to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, last month, in which he wrote that the two nations have shared interests in fighting the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, but that any cooperation between Tehran and Washington on this issue would hinge upon reaching an agreement over Iran's nuclear program.
A senior Iranian official said Sunday that Obamas secret letter to Khamenei last month had a positive impact on Irans leadership.
In Tehrans first public acknowledgment of the letter, in which Obama reportedly stated that a nuclear agreement with Iran could pave the way to U.S.-Iranian cooperation against Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, Ali Khoram, adviser to Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, told London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat that the letter had changed the Iranian leaders approach to the possibility of reaching a nuclear agreement.
Despite 30 years of mistrust, Iran and the U.S. are convinced that it is in their national interests to negotiate a final settlement, said Khoram. He said there has been a shift in Irans view of the United States as the great Satan, in light of changes in Irans policies towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and towards Syria and Iraq.
