Gunter Grass has criticized Israel's decision to ban him from entering the country, comparing it to actions taken by the former communist East Germany and Myanmar.

Grass had prided himself on being the 'moral compass' of the German people, pressing them to deal with the crimes of their past. In 2006, however, he admitted that he had been a member of Hitler's notorious Waffen SS, a late revelation that undermined his authority and reliability.

But Israel, like any country, has a right to let in or exclude anyone it wishes. I think they're over-reacting. But so is he- because being refused entry by a country to which you have no real connection is exactly the same thing as being imprisoned and tortured by your own country's ruling regime. Not.

That's his whole POINT, in a way. If you judge EVERYONE on the worst thing they ever did in their life, then the fundamentalists are right, and we all deserve to spend eternity in hell.

When Israel admits what they are, and what they're doing, the whole process will move along a lot better. The Germans learned that denial doesn't work.
